Imagine Babies: What's a watermark?

Images from iStockPhoto: $12
Stealing the preview images instead: $0
Seeing the watermark on your finished, printed artwork: priceless

Oh yeah!
F*cking Incredible!!!

I suspect that might have been a prerelease mockup. The final artwork looks like this.

Saw a vendor presentation the other day where the vendor rep had slapped a watermarked stock photo into his presentation and flipped it horizontally in the hopes the writing would be illegible... I guess?

Not ideal.

These were pretty quickly replaced in the UK.

Here's the kotaku piece blasting the a/w.

Freaking awesome.

They did this at my last job all the time. I was new and pointed it out - boy did I lose points with management and become 'a problem' after that.

So glad I don't work there anymore!

Nice Post. You may like to post it at diggsamachar and votedlinks for greater coverage.

Yeah, it's a mock-up. If you look carefully there's watermarks on the top two images in circles as well.

These are from a Ubisoft media pack announcing a set of DS games in the UK. The media packs were distributed to games magazines and the press, and so on.

Not quite as bad as putting them on shelves, but still very embarrassing for the company.

Yeah, you might really want to pull this entry, since it was just a mockup and never actually appeared on a box.

On the other hand, it's super-cheap to pay for stock photos and you shouldn't even let mockups go out in press kits with this kind of thing hanging on there.

But this site calls out the gross injustices of touchup work, not the fairly minor trivia of the graphic design process, no?

I love this blog, but can I make a suggestion? Can you have the smaller pictures link to larger pictures? It's difficult to really see what you're talking about sometimes when the pictures are so small.

Great work in any case. :)

a company in my town did the same thing... except it made it onto the two giant billboards before anyone caught it.

Seeing as how the artwork was distributed so that magazines and newspapers would use it, yes, it is a huge fuck-up.

Fantastically-great blog. I can't wait to see some more PS nightmares. Truly entertaining.

Keep it up! I'm now a subscriber ;)

What's the fuzz for. It's only a mockup!

To present something you always use watermarked photos, then at the final product you purchase them and replace ones from mockup.

Bleh. Final cover

Grumpy Bear said...

Not sure everyone got the memo about it being a mockup.
Gamespot
has the watermark image on their site.

oh well.

Tiger said...

All of the images used in that cover have a watermark.. the others say "ert"

The big question... why is a game for babies rated ages 3+?

Babies will have to hang around outside shops hoping to find a toddler who can go in and purchase it on their behalf.

Anonymous said...

It's about babies, not for them. Smartass ;)

Guess Nintendo never heard of SXC

I can't figure out what's worse, the watermark or the actual game itself?

Looks like someone may have used an unpaid-for comp image. Shameful!

I used to work for an Ubisoft studio, and this completely doesn't surprise me. There's a lot of self-delusion that goes on there, especially regarding things like box art (which is done as sort of an afterthought, and the first mockup is often the final design). Plus, things always go so quick there that any artwork, screenshots, etc. always end up getting sent to the gaming press, even if they're intended to be hidden "bonus" assets or whatever.

Plus, the gaming press is so desperate to post any artwork they come across (so they can be the biggest/best site for everything game-related) that even things which are specifically said to be NOT FOR REDISTRIBUTION are often put up.

I can't begin to describe the joy this brings to my heart.

Comp or not, the designer should have known that this was going to be widely distributed to outside sources. I hope the photographer or iStock hits this one hard for copyright violations.

skipintro said...

i don't see the big deal if its a mockup and i certainly don't think the designer can be blamed.

i often do freelance jobs for companies who want mockups of the artwork presenting which then have to be approved by various levels of management.

it's standard practice to use comps until everything in the artwork has been approved at every level, as pictures often need swapping out at the last minute. The final pics are only purchased at the end of the process when the job is being prepared for print, otherwise companies would end up paying to licence photos they didn't end up using.

Okay, one or two unnecessarily bought images may not seem costly, but imagine the cost of thousands over the course of a year.

the only shocking thing to me is that a company the size of nintendo is happy to use generic images on its product packaging and marketing. I guess this just shows how cheap stock imagery has killed the photographers ability to command a fair price.

This sh#t was too funny! I gotta keep checking back here!

There's also the "StockXpert" watermark on the top-left and top-right pics.

Applause for Ubi =D

i honestly hope no one here actually believes that this was produced.... or even potentially going to be produced as is.

Anonymous said...

Oh My God, hahahahahahahahaha. Priceless!!!

Olga said...

It's realy funny, but I think that this work was mistakenly printed instead of accepted file with purchased images in it.

Anonymous said...

Hilarious...I make graphics for a news station, and I know it's a bitch to get the iStock watermark off.

Thomas said...

Haha, they didn't even photoshop the text away!

Anonymous said...

haha! They didn't get rid of the text because it's a MOCKUP not meant for retail distribution. I fail to see how this is a "disaster" since it was for in-house vendors. Whoopeee!

Oh it was. It totally was.

I stock pictures with watermark are low resolution?. Then how can they print this (at 72dpi) and not see it!

Jay said...

Considering that the gaming and music industry are complaining about huge losses due to copying, piracy and downloading, you should think they use other people's work lawfully themselves i. e. pay for stock-photos. Doesn't matter that this here was not supposed to leave the designer's desk. The idea behind it is what counts.
You cannot complain about other people speeding and at the same time run red lights yourself.
It's pathetic.

Jennie said...

It's definitely just a mockup. I have Imagine Babies and mine doesn't look like that. The first ones made might look like that, though.
