Nordic Catalog Disaster

This Norwegian Danish Norwegian Canadian Danish catalog plays fast and loose with the juxtaposing and the cropping with delightfully regrettable results.

Thanks Ichonderoga, you're super-cool!

Wide base. Relatively low center of gravity. Admirably stable, I'm thinking.

WHAT. THE. FUCK?!

That's a mistake of elephantine proportions. The layout work's not that clever, either.

Karissa said...

Hey, that is not Norwegian, it is Danish ;)
I'm from Denmark, so I should know.

But yes, we have some really strange looking people over here..

hahahahaha nice

You know, I can do that with MY feet. I can enlarge them to twice their normal size, good for stamping on muggers. This is actually a safety measure employed by a lot of Norwegian women. Bionic feet. Very handy. They have built in rocket boosters, satnav plus handy pockets for your lipbalm. They're AWESOME.

On a (slightly) more serious note, she looks like one of the Fringe people from The Chrysalids...

what's the bigger screw-up? Juxtaposition problems or Who in gods name decided that would be a good pattern to have matching boots and coat?

The Dutchess of Kickball said...

OMG her legs are wider than her abdomen. If I came across this beast in the woods I'd crap my pants.

Lovise said...

Hm... it really could be Norwegian too, I should know, I'm Norwegian, but the languages are really similar. But that does NOT excuse her legs!

Anonymous said...

Do you idiots not see that it's two separate pictures? The bottom one focusing on the boots since that's the object being sold?

You're REALLY reaching. Again.

I understand why they did this.....actually I don't.

Its absolutely pointless to make her legs double size. You would be able to see the pattern if they were in proportion to her upper body. This just makes her look like a freaking cartoon character.

And yes the 'anon' they are separate pictures. You can see the join line, but they have lined them up trying to make the one image. So not only are the legs un-proportionately ugly. The join is equally as bad.

Case closed. Photoshop disaster.

Yeah, they're two separate images that are arranged in such a way to make it look like a picture of one weird elephant mutant lady. Arranged DISASTROUSLY, one might say. Does that seriously look ok to you?

Geez-you would think that with the number of bad magazine articles, etc. I wouldn't be having such a hard time finding a job as an art director (of course this one was Dutch). Any of these dismal failures done in the DC area? PLEASE let me know, I can show up on their doorstop after release <:

Just because you can do something in Photoshop doesn't mean that you ought to do it.

Yuck.

That being said, I'm sure that some of my Photoshopping is of disastrous proportions!

Screw all of you guys, I AM that model. Stop making fun of my giant legs. They aren't huge -- I just have a very small upper body. I have dwarfism. Affecting only my upper half.

Anonymous said...

eh, sorry, i don't buy that that was how the magazine was layed out.

it's not a photograph of the actual magazine, just 2 images of it stuck together as if someone where actually making something to submit to this site.

shenanigans, imo. hope you're not depending on those google ad clicks to pay your rent.

treebough said...

that's amazing.

Whoa!
Wierd how the "den" just comes in from the left, it's not an uncommon ending of words here in the north.
The upper and lower parts are probably on two sides of the same page.

I'd say lack of photoshop-disasters is the father of this bastard.

Great, now we've moved on from troll comments to conspiracy theories. This is just sad.

I had no idea a blog could be this good. Lobstermonster told me, but did I believe her? No, not until I saw this for myself.

Apparently, I am not the only one who sucks at Photoshop. Thank you for pointing out all this... this what...

Obviously you people know nothing about Scandinavian mythology. This is the famous Vertiglatt, a half-elephant-half-maiden. In fact, in Danish, Verti means big animal, and Glatt means virgin.

I um. never agreed with those people who've been saying you've been "reaching" for things to post.

This, however, is reaching. Grasping at straws.

It's obvious they're different pages. Top is focused on the coat, bottom on the boots. It just so happened that they layed it out like that. Bad lay out. LayOutDisaster? Yes. PhotoshopFisaster? Far from it.

Jeez. I'm starting to believe the negative comments I see on this site.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I have to agree with the people who say this is reaching. The ad was probably for two separate pages in a magazine, selling two different products from the same producer or store. They weren't meant to be together at all. It looks like they zoomed in on the legs in the bottom picture, and the fact that they fit together is pure coincidence.

Stacia said...

Are we sure that someone didn't scan 2 separate pages and put them one on top of the other? The backgrounds between the 2 images change and you can clearly see the border between them. I would want to see this picture in the catalog itself before casting blame.

neYYan said...

This is NOT a disaster!. I think it's done intentionally. and it looks "interesting" too..
sorry to say but this blog used to be good.. now it's just anything and everything.

Miss Havisham said...

What is wrong with you people? Don't you know how to laugh?

Grumpykins said...

Her feet are huge. And so are her legs. And...um...woah. Wow. Ugh. Yuk. Doh. 3 letter words. Eek.

Anonymous said...

Unless this is a centerfold, I would not call it a disaster.

Tarquin Middelton said...

Looks like her legs been inflated till it's about to burst.

And did they decide the placement of the text by vomiting it onto the image? Its a mess.

Anonymous said...

@ Miss Havisham

Sure I like a good laugh, but sometimes this site seems unable to tolerate anything but 'normal'. If anyone does anything that isn't straight down the line - something weird - it's a disaster. That's not funny. And this exhibit needs to be shown in context before I can be sure the contributor didn't help it along a little.

Tarquin Middelton said...

It’s not just the leg; the clothes are pretty hideous too. They should censor them out with black boxes. It would improve sales.

Spencer E Holtaway said...

I just almost threw up.

Moans said...

It could be Norwegian too, Danish and Norwegian are very similar. I'm from Norway, so I should know as well XD Anywho, I hope it's Danish, they've always been...eccentric.

disastrous, true, but i still love netto. the full page makes sense though:

http://viewer.zmags.com/showmag.php?linksid=1351#/page0/

Anonymous said...

Now seeing the actual ad... this still isn't forgiveable. Photoshop is the victim in this. It is made to look a fool through the placement of these photos. My eyes hurt. There IS a preview function. The user apparently didn't use it or see the glaring misplacement of images. It also seems she was given more hair... the layers don't seem right, but I can't be sure.

Anonymous said...

Yes, the lay-out sucks, but that doesn't mean the editor actually wanted it to look like one picture. It's just two seperate images that shouldn't have been displayed one on top of the other. That doesn't make it a Photoshop disaster.

Constant Drama said...

Dude, photoshop disaster or not those boots are FUGLY. Who wears boots that have flowers on them? Seriously?

Anonymous said...

HAHAHA.... maybe someone was practicing perspective ;)

jenschulze said...

Does no one else see that those aren't knees? That is an ass! They really screwed up the job and used the top half of a lady in a jacket, then they slapped on the legs in jeans (butt is pointing left, front of person pointing right, notice the bottom of a shirt that would be at the waistband of the jeans near the bottom of the jacket) and then they slapped on some GIANT boots pointing in the same direction as the person's tiny head. Youch. This is a bad one.

Rune Jensen said...

i just found this catalog, just to see if it was real.

Yes, that is how it looks, but it's not made so it should look like one image. That is actually made pretty clear on the page.

I dont get it, its 2 different pages put together vertically. Unless magazines have totally changed their layout then what is the problem?

Epic fail photoshopdisasters.

Rhody said...

The problem is it looks ridiculous. Anyone pretending not to see something wrong with this picture is obviously just trolling.

Anonymous said...

Have never used a magazine before? How many magazines have you used where the pages flipped vertically like a calendar? This is just a submitter getting the best of the admin by photoshoping these 2 pictures together. It was already mentioned in the comments that it was not laid out to look like this. Its common sense that the page on the left was a shot of the jacket and the page on the right was a shot of the boots.

Marie. said...

I see someone left a comment saying that it's Danish.
But it could be Norwegian also.
I'm Norwegian, and have some basic knowledge in Danish, and it could be either, because it is correct in Norwegian too.

Rune Jensen said...

marie. > This IS the danish catalog for Netto last week. I've cheked if it is how it looks, and they've got these things in th magazine :)

to anyone: THIS IS HOW THEY PUT IT IN THE MAGAZINE!! And it is also made clear, that it is two seperate pictures! There's no disaster at all!!!

Stian N. said...

This ain't danish - it's Norwegian...

Rhody said...

"THIS IS HOW THEY PUT IT IN THE MAGAZINE!! And it is also made clear, that it is two seperate pictures!"

That's pretty stupid. It looks weird. That's the disaster. It doesn't matter if they openly admit that they're two separate images and they're not trying to make them look like one image. It LOOKS like that woman has a giant malformed leg. That's a problem. If you tried to do something like that at a graphic design school, you'd fail.

Chromatically Challenged said...

"Look! We've reached the bottom of the barrel and guess what? There's another barrel underneath it and there's even more stuff down here that we can pass off as disasters in the vain hope we can reach the top of the blog charts."

It's quite, no, blatantly obvious that these are 2 separate pages. Please don't procreate.

Anonymous said...

Its Norwegian.

Anonymous said...

no its not norwegian.

the ad can be seen on the frontpage now: http://netto.dk

Anonymous said...

To those that say this is wrong, obviously your eyes need adjusting. If you look close enough, you can see a distinguishable color difference between the "torso" and the "leg". Notice how the leg has a lighter blue than the torso? That's because they're two separate images. Any person would realize they zoomed in to get a better shot of the boots.

roto13 said...

It's amazing how many people are missing the point entirely. Of course it's too separate images. It's two images arranged in a COMPLETELY AWKWARD WAY. It doesn't matter if they were trying to create the illusion that they're one image or not. The point is it looks like there's a woman there with elephant legs, even though if you look closely you can see it's not real. If it wasn't a disaster, the thought would never even enter your mind.

Chromatically Challenged said...

Roto: You hit the nail on the head. The pictures are arranged so they look bad. From the top, once more:

"Have you seen a truly awful piece of Photoshop work? Clumsy manipulation, senseless comping, lazy cloning and thoughtless retouching are our bread and butter. And yes, deep down, we love Photoshop."

This is the Photoshop disasters blog: nowhere can I see mention of Quark, Indesign or any other piece of publishing layout software.

No pixels were harmed in the making of this misconception. Move along, nothing to see here.

Rhody said...

Nitpick more. It doesn't make you seem at all sad and pathetic for caring so much.

Honestly, if the name of the blog was changed to "advertising disasters" I'm pretty sure a lot of you would have to burst in the tears because you'd need to find something else to bitch and moan about.

Chromatically Challenged said...

Now let's see: you're criticising me for nitpicking, on a site that practically thrives on it? Alanis, if you'd be so kind as to do the honours..

Karissa.. You fail, it's norwegian. Exaclty how it's spelled in norwegian, but the model is probably danish, since she's so fat.

Haha, yeah this is danish first thing came to my mind when seeing this add was to post it here.. Thats really funny that picture.. Or them pictures

It really is danish, have you not seen the links throughout this page? It is from a danish catalogue called Netto!

Who gives a fuck what language it is; the catalog is Danish.

Jesper said...

Don't wanna be an asshole here, but it's impossible to tell if this is danish or norwegian. Both countries has Netto-catalogues (probably the same ones too), and the words are similar in both languages.

"I'm norwegian and danish, so I should know"

However, the broad with the huge ass thighs is definitly not norwegian nor danish... she's probably swedish (meheh). :-)

maybe she had too much sodium? or congestive heart failure where her legs swell up? (happens to my mom...)

unfortunately, it is not a photoshop mistake. it is a RIP issue when an image with any transparency is improperly flattened, and gets "blown out". I only know this because the same thing happened with a customer's artwork (united way rackcard to be exact). there was an image that had exactly this effect happen, only it was a front shot, so it looked like her bottom half started at her boobies.
hilarious, only when i caught the problem BEFORE the print job was delivered to the customer.
