Elle: Mariah Carey Reassembled

Oh dear, it seems Elle has been getting Carey-ed away with their Photoshopping. Dlisted and JustJared weigh in, along with Gawker. Where do you think her right other right arm joins her body? Freaky.

Thanks to the Psd Elle Monitoring Team: Alissa, JuliaGulia, Matt S, Roberto & Diana E.

I love how the magazine references her "new body" on the cover.

Anonymous said...

You mean her left arm, right?

perspicio said...

This one's a Miss Carey miscarriage. The font is the culprit: black letters with white "shadows". (See the "N" in "FASHION", and the "+" below it.)

No evidence of photo-altering.

LGD said...

I thought you were referring to her head being off-center of her neck.

Anonymous said...

I don't think it's as bad as some. Her neck looks funny because hair is covering the right side of it. The pose is a bit awkward, but photoshoots get those results sometimes...they just picked a bad photo. Of course they did the typical slimming and smoothing, but I don't see it as awful.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I'm completely confused as to what's actually wrong with this one.

Anonymous said...

Is the head oversized or the "new body" undersized?

Anonymous said...

check her left hand for fingers and thumb... compare with your own when you hold it like that o_O

Anonymous said...

Oh come on you morons... her left arm (on the right to you) is attached to her body much lower down than her right arm (on the left of the photo).

It's got nothing to do with white shadows you putz.

Also, I don't think it's possible for a human head/neck to do that.

Jeez, some people...

stack said...

The human head/neck is very certainly capable of doing that.

I'm in the "I don't get it" crowd.

Anonymous said...

Oh, look! Another giraffe.

Allie said...

She looks like Alice in that Alice In Wonderland illustration where her neck stretches like a serpent.

Amarie said...

Wait a minute? Is that her thumb or her pinky? I'm confused right now...

and maybe the human neck could do that if you're a gimnast or something, otherwise I really doubt it.

Gemma said...

People... look at her left arm (right hand side of the picture).

How on earth is it joining on to her body under that conveniently draped hair? Wherever you think it joins her body (even if you draw a freeking right angle from the lowest piece of visible skin), it's joining at a significantly lower point on her torso than the other arm.

Try measuring the length of each of her arms from torso to elbow. Her dubious arm is much longer... which makes sense given its lower position on her torso.

Anonymous said...

It looks like her head is loose and she´s just holding it over her neck.

Minika said...

The smile is kinda crooked or slanted.

Tip for the site: Have you guys seen Angie Jolie's arm in the poster for her new movie "Wanted"?

Anonymous said...

come people, look at her mutant right hand.

Marco Lopes said...

So, she's got two left arms, one comming from the middle of her torso and a broken neck. What's special about it? I'm betting at least half a dozen anonymous can do that...

Digital Geist said...

her face looks like it was removed from a different picture and slapped onto that head...

Anonymous said...

"..it's joining at a significantly lower point on her torso than the other arm."

If you look at her shoulder line, it's obviously angled so of course the arm on the right would be lower.

Casimir said...

@minika:
Do you mean this one?

Anonymous said...

wait...am i the only one who sees the (?) chunk of armpit or something that's poking out in the middle of the O?

Jim said...

Her new body - some assembly required. For the many of you who apparently have never seen an actual human before:
1. Her head floats above her neck at unnatural angle
2. Her left arm isn't attached
3. She has two left hands

Anonymous said...

You people are idiots; they're's nothing wrong with this photo besides MAYBE her left arm being slightly lower than it should be. Although, she's not standing perfectly straight, her shoulders are sloped a tad, so her hair is distorting everything.

Anonymous said...

I would make the guess that in the original shot she had BOTH arms on her head the way the right arm is. However, two such arms will not fit on the cover of Elle so they sorta re-engineered the left arm to shorten it up. Notice that the first "L" goes behind the arm so you can see her bangles, but the second "L" is conveniently covering the place where here hand is theoretically touching her head. Plus the convenient fall of hair over the armpit... all in all makes me think "arm-chop".

Can't quite decide about the head though. But I do think an enourmous opportunity was missed here in not calling the post "Mariah: Re-Touch My Body."

Stephanie said...

I'd have to say that this is one giant mess of awkward. It may not be as noticeable as others, but it's still pretty bad.

I hate the way she was photoshopped around the display text...like she's trying to hold on for dear life!

jgodsey said...

the only thing on straight are her boobs. but then they would be, wouldn't they?

HM said...

no wonder when you squeeze something or somebody to fit the frame you'll deform them. M.C. is no exception.

gunslnger said...

Uh, it looks fine. She's leaning to the side a little (you can tell by looking at her waist where one side is a little scrunched up) and so it looks like her arm joins lower on one side, but in fact there's not a problem with the photo. Some people are just trying to find a problem where there isn't one.

Charlene said...

I like how she's three full sizes smaller in this image than she is in real life too.

Gotta keep up the fraud that any woman can be rail-thin unless she won't tryyyy hard enough...

Heather said...

wait...am i the only one who sees the (?) chunk of armpit or something that's poking out in the middle of the O?

I see it, too. But I fail to see why it should be mentioned. What's wrong with it?

Anonymous said...

X marks the spot... or the boobie.

pootpoot said...

Right, Heather, no need to mention the "chunk of armpit poking out", as it is none. It's the white shadow of the O that carves into the body below the armpit.

Anonymous said...

actually I don't see anything bad...

Anonymous said...

Neither do I.
"The human head and neck can't do this", "the arm joins at the boobs", "mutated hand" ... that's all bull if you ask me.

Anonymous said...

I'm curious. Those of you who see nothing wrong with this picture -- do you think this is an unretouched photograph, a photograph that has been airbrushed for skin tone but nothing major, or a substantially photoshop work that looks fine?

Anonymous said...

I think it is a photoshopped photo - i guess it was her right side that was retouched, though. -> holding your arm up like she does, your chest seems to broaden, as the musculus latissimus gets angled away from the body. Possibly that seemed too masculine, so they dragged those parts inwards again, at least on her right, where they could do so without tangling in the hair. Try in front of a mirror - her left (on the right of the picture) is quite natural, while her right (on the left of the picture) is far too undermuscled.
About her hand: Weird but natural, can do it in the mirror too.
About her head: Couldn't do it in the mirror, but maybe somebody with a long neck would like to supply us with more experimental data?

Well, I can pose my arms like Mariah's doing. It is hard work, very unnatural, but doable. She does have to bend her left hand (our right) to keep it from showing up behind her head. Considering how awkward the whole pose is, I'm inclined to agree with those who think her arms got moved/angled a bit in Photoshop.

Anonymous said...

Look through the O in Fashion. They've detached her right arm from her body.

"You people are idiots; they're's nothing wrong with this photo besides MAYBE her left arm being slightly lower than it should be."

Idiots! Fools! I love that cowardly little MAYBE to acknowledge there is something very dodgy about that arm. Meantime: dolts! cretins! :-)

Anonymous said...

The disaster is that she really did strike that pose only for them to make it look like her head was pasted on and shadow her pinkie to make it look like the start of a thumb.

Anonymous said...

This one I know, because I once did something much like this and got away with it, too. The original pose was both arms arranged almost identically in the classic "hands bracing head' pose. Layout time for the over comes around. A problem arose: The pose is too wide for the layout without clipping her elbows off and the art director balks at that. Solution: cut one arm, rotate it and then plunk it back in so it looks like it was elevated and rotated from the shoulder with her hand behind her head, cloning and erasing to make the hair lie over the munged up shoulder and hide it. Mostly.

tama.brett said...

does any one read the comments before they post?

it's already been said, but measure from her elbow to torso on each arm.

Davey B said...

Weak. Save PSD for ACTUAL disasters. This shot wasn't that bad. Posting it as a disaster cheapens the glory of this site.

Take a look at her hair, just below her shoulder on her right side (left side of the photograph). There's a line where the hair... kinda disappears or fades.

Yes, this photograph has certainly been photoshopped.

leatherargento said...

Oksy:

"Right" upper arm: 5.2 cm.

"Left" upper arm: 6.3 cm.

Measured: From bottom of armpit to tip of elbow.

I don't think even Mtv can hide a "figure flaw" like that.

Sorry.

Anonymous said...

her body doesn't fit in the picture somehow. like some made up dummy. i9ts just not balanced...somehow. well the photographers have probably had better pics and better cover ups...

Anonymous said...

Again, this blog is much better when the photoshopping truly leads to a disaster. This image is not different from every other magazine cover out there right now.

But I realise it's hard to find the really bad stuff everyday.

Anonymous said...

I agree with most of the comments: head is weirdly angled, left arm is too low, torso is way smaller than her arms and head.

I disagree however with the "two left hands" comments. I think the exposed hand is clearly a right hand. Look at the muscle bulge at the bottom -- that's clearly the thumb, which means the hand is actually oriented correctly for a right hand when the arm is in that position: pinky up, thumb down.

Anonymous said...

Okay, I have looked, and re-looked, and looked again. I see NOTHING wrong with this picture, but I do see something wrong with the "Anonymous" posters referring to those of us who don't see anything wrong as "idiots", "dolts", "cretins", or the like. Totally unnecessary to say that.

Anonymous said...

you know what? why don't you guys get a life? the most important thing of the day for you is nit-picking at a magazine cover. what a waste of time and brains!

Anonymous said...

look at her thumb on her right hand. Is is 2x longer than a normal human thumb or is it her pinky? Weird. Her neck and face are not algined correctly. Really strange pic

Scote said...

Yeah, nothing wrong. Er, except her left upper arm appears to be about 6 inches longer than the right and connects with her torso **below** the shoulder. Try the pose in a mirror and see if you can do it.

Anonymous said...

I think it makes her look like she really is. FAKE!

Anonymous said...

Anonymous: Please you"ll get a life!!!!!!!

Why are people saying such mean things about her,I think that she is a beautiful person. She's trying to do the best that she can to look beautiful for everyone. When she gained weight people talked about her for that also, now that she's tried to do something about it they are still talking. Get over it!!

Hel said...

her hand looks odd...

Anonymous said...

Uh, well folks it is all natural, and you all are imagining.

She is leaning on a green wall, thus her elbow supporting her weight and the neck shift, quite normal by the way.

Her left shoulder blade is pushed over from the lean and thus the what appears to be an added arm, sorry it's just a lowered shoulder blade and arm with it.

Her right hand is well completely normal.

Folks the human anatomy is quite more flexible than some of you seem to know.

Oh, wait, yes, I believe a boob is upside down, that's it.

Anonymous said...

i'd still bend her

She looks like she is removing her head.

Hi Mariah looks fab in this picture, does anyone know where her husband nick cannon got that (oht) ku-tur tshirt with the cashmere patches, I saw one of those shirts in miami, but I havent seen them in the northeast, i think there upscale premium shirts that retail for a lot, can anyone shed any light

Dang. Look at all these comments. It's hilarious.

Because reading the war on Iraq is so boring... not to mention, depressing.

Anonymous said...

Unbelievable. Over fifty pecent of these comments seem to come from people who don't know what women look like when they move, and don't know what women look like when their movement is stopped by a still capture. This has nothing to do with photoshop. P.S., when you gather your long hair as if to clear the neck or make a ponytail, you lift it with the thumb from underneath. Duh.

leatherargento said...

to the immediately above:

Women don't look aaaaalllll that much different when they move than men do. We're not some magic chimeras who can dislodge our cervical vertebrae to make ponytails and put our thumbs on backwards just for fun. We're humans with human skeletons that follow the basic laws of anatomy, physiology, and physics. This photo seems to think otherwise. If it were a still from Pan's Labyrinth II, it would be kinda okay (except that I'm hoping Mariah wouldn't be in any sequel to that masterpiece). It's in a magazine about traditional Western standards of beauty, though, and that means it should all be normally-proportioned and the skeleton should be attached the way they are in anatomy textbooks. Especially the skull. It's hard to go around living and such without a firmly-attached skull.

Matt Boyd said...

There is absolutely nothing to this.

Point 1: Her left hand isn't visible presumably because she is gathering her hair with it. Go ahead, make a fist behind your head and see if you can see your thumb and fingers in the mirror.

Point 2: Her head is tilted to the side. What's so freakin' magical about tilting one's head?

Point 3: The left arm - - are y'all incapable of rendering vanishing points in your head? Her whole ribcage is tilted to viewer's right.

Ahh, forget it: here's a visual aid for you.

Richard G said...

Never mind the photoshop disasters. Nobody picked up on the strategic placement of the "+" sign?

Reminds me of Wendy O Williams who uused black electrical tape in a cross pattern for the same purpose.

david lewis said...

I am a photographer, and I use Photoshop daily. The picture has been totally doctored and it is left looking really unnatural. I think it all started with trying to make her look slimmer, when we all know she is very volutous. The biggest perpetrator is the editor, who "ok'd" the final shot to be on the cover. They should be fired.

Mehta P said...

Her right hand (anatomical right) is fine - you can see on the bottom of the hand the outlines that begin her thumb. It's a bad shot though, and makes her pinky look like it should be her thumb though.

As for the "arm is detached, look through the 'O'", no. The white space there is part of the letter's drop shadow.

Anonymous said...

Her head looks quite detachable. Maybe when you are Mariah you can afford to do that.

RandyThe Fool said...

I've come to the conclusion that most everybody here is full of crap and if an honest-to-god normal picture were posted here, just about everybody would have a different opinion about what's really "wrong" with it.

Anonymous 1: "It's the leg, definitely the leg. It looks like it's been partially erased."

Anonymous 2: "No, doofus, it's the tree in the background. Look at those leaves! That was so copy and pasted in there!"

Anonymous 3: "What's with her face? It looks like somebody hacked it up with an ax! I mean, look at those dimples."

Anonymous 1: "pfft, as if. It's definitely the leg. It was transplanted off a hermaphroditic whore."

Anonymous 4: "My god, her head is turned slightly to the right. A neck can't be that way! That's impossible!"

Anonymous 2: "The trees! IT' THE TREES!!!! And the body looks like it came from a bobble-head doll. LOL!"

For Christ teeth. This is "Photoshop DISASTERS"... not "Photoshop Slight, and Barely Noticeable, Mishaps". If people can't come to a conclusion about what the problem with the picture really is... then it's not necessarily a disaster, is it? So why is it here?

This picture looks fine. It's an awkward pose (but it is a pose after all) the leaning to the right explains the left (your right) arm, there's nothing wrong with the hand, and her head is in a "Oh no you didn't... You ain't my baby's daddy! *Snaps fingers in front of face*" pose and her body is proportionate to her head (hair can be fooling after all.), Not that it isn't completely improbable that she, or anyone else, just has a naturally big head.

Maria said...

the more I look at this, the funnier it gets.

GeeTee said...

I don't get where the disaster on this is either.

Stand in front of a mirror and do that same pose - your shoulders won't be level unless you're that guy on America's got Talent who can fit himself into a washing machine.

Anonymous said...

It looks to me like her head's come off and she's trying to hold it back in place.

Angie said...

I use Photoshop for a living.

This photo is most DEFINITELY altered, and badly.

naroniel said...

omg. that is really badly photoshopped. her arm looks completely off.

Anonymous said...

The disaster is that they've 'shopped her head onto a completely different body. If you look at any recent pictures of MC, she's a totally different shape. What we're dealing with here, ladeez an' gennelmen is a big fat l*i*e.

jamie said...

is only one person really going to point out that HER WHOLE LEFT HAND IS MISSING? surely even those who steadfastly shout that this is not a disaster can see that her left hand should be showing on the other side of her head (again, measurements, people). also to those who said we have nothing better to do and that the webmaster is nitpicking - you clearly have nothing better to do either or you'd not be slagging us off and when you have your own website you can paste photos of all the unnatural poses your body can do or whatever the heck you want, but this is NOT your website and you really don't get to decide what goes on it.
