Google Maps: Unusually Similar Trees = Black Helicopters

I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for Google Maps getting all clone-happy in this part of Holland. It's probably just a secret alien landing site or something.

The whole area is full of Photoshopped artefacts. Theories welcome. Thanks to MK!

There are a lot of cloned areas.
But sometimes they just work more sloppy. Like the Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

Weird..

There are a lot of reasons the satellite photos get 'shopped, mostly clouds and missing patches. They're made up of many satellite pass-bys and if something is missed or obscured they'll either leave it as a black box (you can see these around google maps as well), redo it or just 'shop a bit.

Alejo said...

Go for it! The sooner the better! Perhaps you could make your own blog, wherein you complain about how much your own blog sucks. That would be awesome!

Anonymous said...

Nice catch. This 'shop job wouldn't be so obvious if they'd avoided cloning that light-colored bit of tree. I love scrutinizing google maps imagery and finding things like this, myself.

And to the complainers: what the hell is wrong with you guys? This is obviously photoshopped, not very well, and in a place where most people don't expect to see photoshopping at all. It's interesting. I can sorta understand bitching about posts where the original image wasn't photoshopped, or it was just the result of poor art direction, but this is a classic photoshop disaster. And if you're really that unhappy with the blog, just leave – nobody will miss you. And those of us who enjoy it, and just ignore the underwhelming posts, can go on reading without your cynical noise gunking things up.

It looks like Google bought limited use-rights from some aerial photo company. If you zoom in as far as allowed on Maps, the ghostly, almost legible artifacts of what looks like text watermarks can be seen strewn about the area in a semi-regular pattern.

Keep in mind that Google Maps isn't exclusively satellite photos. They use a great deal of aerial photo material.

anon @ 4:46:

I suspect the anon you were discussing sees anything but obsequious butt-kissing of his country as abuse - but he also sees comments that have *nothing whatsoever to do with the American government* as abuse, because he can't wrap his head around the idea that the world does not revolve around him.

He then twists everyone else's words so that even the mildest criticism of America (and even criticism of Google!) sounds like insane anti-Americanism. That makes him feel patriotic, because he's "defended his country" from "abuse" and made everyone who disagrees with him into an "extremist". It's pretty sad and pathetic.

That or he's ten years old. Trolls do the same kind of stuff.

At any rate, either he'll grow up or shut up one day. He really does make the US look very, very bad, though.

Aerial photography like this is a mosaic of overlapping images. If you pan ease/west you can follow the seam. It's pretty common to use Photoshop to fix the seam when it really stands out, and tall trees tend to show seams really well, since they have different illuminations when viewed from the north and the south. They also will "lean" away from the center of the lens due to perspective. This is pretty lousy Photoshop work, but there's nothing sinister about it.

like repairs to the cistine chapel, the intent is to fill in the gaps, but not make it look "natural". the purpose of this is so it is obvious where missing data is when there is a new peice of data. black hole are uasally in the original image, cause by bugs, dirt etc.. and long white streaks are usually left by blocks of data that dont line up perfectly...

Over at Google Sightseeing, we've seen this kind of thing several times before:

http://googlesightseeing.com/2007/03/13/planes-in-formation/

There's some suggestion that the aerial imagery is doctored by the companies that capture it, before it is sold on to the likes of Google. Not to hide anything however, but rather to "watermark" the images as belonging to that company, to provide proof of ownership should they need to fight theft of their copyrighted images.

It might be due to something fairly innocuous: Google protecting its copyright: They can easily tell if someone else has "borrowed" their images if someone else's images show mods that Google's added. Map makers often do this sort of thing... Of course it might be a fleet of Alien Invasion vehicles under their mods, too.

Here's my theory: OF COURSE any number of world governments are going to photoshop satellite mass for public viewing. They aren't going to let that stuff loose! But I think they will photoshop better than this. The trouble is, there are a lot of clever photoshop spotters - they can simply make a list of the places that are photoshopped and Viola! They deduct where the secret military bases, testing labs, and government vacation compounds must be! Therefore, it would make sense that the governments would do a lot of BOGUS bad photoshop "fixes" in unimportant places to mask the location of the real secret stuff.

I live near a military base which is "blocked" by Google.
Which is kindof silly, because the whole terrain can be seen from the rails AND the public roads. Yet the whole live range is UNblocked, while it has been known to have contained nuclear weapons in the eighties (It as more acceptable back then) and is still rumoured there still are.

Doesn't such cloning/blocking however pretty much "bullseye" where to fire your WMD's at ?
