J Crew: Does This Make My Cutout Look Fat?

Fixing up a picture, trimming a little material, making it pretty, are all perfectly acceptable things to do with Photoshop. On the other hand, you might not want to put the original right next to the shopped copy. Kind of self-defeating.

Rollover the first two images here for instant gratification. Thanks to Bradford!

fan-effing-tastic! They're almost like Hammer pants.

Niiice. The rollover adds a whole new dimension - animated FAIL.

That's seriously "...what?" territory. Why? Why would you even do that?

Probably some idiot that doesn't know how to use the CMS.

So sad. So, this false advertising, yes? Those pants do have wide thighs and they do look wrinkle and seem to have a coarse texture.

So J Crew wants to sell the nice looking "imaginary" pants instead of the product they actually stock.

Bad, J Crew. No integrity. None. Epic fail, you morons.

You've got to see the original to appreciate the crapness!

Trimming a little material is acceptable in a magazine or newspaper ad since the buyer will presumably have a chance to try the trousers on before she buys them and see how they fit.

In an e-commerce setting, however, the image is the only way the buyer can determine exactly how the item will fit. Misrepresenting that is simply bad for business. If the trousers arrive baggier than the buyer expects the buyer will return them and may even stop buying from that vendor.

Online catalogues can't be pretty if prettiness gets in the way of accuracy. It's simply bad business practice.

that's fairly awesomely bad. I see these sorts of variety pictures on clothing sites a lot, and I tend to think they're being helpful with all the extra shots...maybe I'll look more closely?? Love the animation effect on the original site.

JCrew does this all the time. A few months ago (before I started reading this blog) I noticed a photo of bathing suit where the model's thighs had been shaved awkwardly thinner. You can still see the rollover here. At least in the pants one they aren't messing with flesh.

Tobyn said...

Heh, yeah, gotta look at the rollover to get the full effect.

wow. just amazing, 'specially with the side-by-side. But the link sarah posted ^^^ just makes it all insanely frightening.

The left foot looks strange and too thin also.

Also note the obvious warping on the shirt in all the pictures.

This is more likely a brain 2.0 disaster :D

great shadow with that cut on the underside of the thigh... dead giveaway... its obviously a common problem see http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Feature_Assortment/catalogjcrewcomexclusives/swim/PRDOVR~95377/95377.jsp roll over photos 1 & 4 for a hip lowering effect.. not done very well either...

Not only is it so stupid that they put the original on there, but they shouldn't be allowed to edit out clothing folds like that! It gives people a false view of how the clothes will fit them. False advertising in my opinion

Hahahahahha!!! I LOVE the roll over!!!! That was just FUN!!

Note to self though... Do Not Buy From J Crew!!

And one more bikini bottom thigh mishap: Boy leg hipster bikini

Looking at that one, I kinda started to think that maybe they've actually made the thighs wider, not the other way around. The shadow on the left inner thigh seems to be a bit off.

these "thigh removal" ones are really weird. I can't be the only one who thinks the "before" is actually better than the "after".

David said...

Now THAT'S comedy!

Max said...

Is this some kind of joke?
I can see no other reason to do this (especially the thigh "corrections").

Alejo said...

What's up with that? Who thinks thighs are supposed to cut in like that? Freaky. And then to put them side by side so the PSing is so obvious ... this might be one of the worst disasters yet. It's like the PSer was saying, "Real life, my fantasy, real life, may fantasy, real life, my fantasy," and the fantasy is cree-py.

I know what store *not* to buy from... Thanks for giving me something to stim on... That roll over...Makes me wonder if someone did that deliberatly because they were disturbed about poor business ethics? Maybe not. Wishful thinking.

Hilarious on more than one level.
Great finding.

Jcrew has had all kinds of issues the last couple weeks. They screwed up my friend's wedding dress order, in fact.

Here is the apology that's been on the home page:

My first thought on seeing the pants shift:
The darn thing's got wings!

Really love the Thighmaster jobs. And the waist lowering made me grin. Notice they're using the same model in all the photos -- see the distinctive navel and mole on its lower edge. (Niiice midriff, but that's another matter.)

I agree, I could swear they've ADDED to the thighs in the bikini shot. There is a definite curve to her thighs in other shots on the site.

nice work me thinks you can really see the difference with the rollover

One other problem with this item, roll over the blue color.....

Now that's some amazing photoshop... errrrr

If this is widespread, no wonder why when my wife shops online she ends up returning 50% of what she buys. This is just sad.

mateja said...

yes, they definitely widened her thighs in the bikini pictures. i have a similar shape thighs and it does look more realistic then the "straight leg" version.

That's a little less than smart.

I agree with those who say the original shot of the pants looks better! Those are comfort pants. They're supposed to be loose. Bad work all around.

Boooo.....

They've updated teh website - no longer shows the wings.

don't you see there are too many occurrences of the same dumb mistake? there is no way it's an accident. the graphic designer who asked to make these false changes probably got pissed and this is how he express his little protest

It looks to me like she's marching to White Stripes - Seven Nation Army when you rollover the first two images back and forth.

"I'm gonna cut 'em off! A Photoshop Disaster won't hold me back!"

I honestly don't see the issue here. Companies everywhere do this sort of thing; it's a common business practice. Also, I commend J.Crew for actually using models that aren't bone-skinny like a lot of high-end retailers. Even if they tweak the thighs a bit, the models are still more real then most out there.
As far as them altering the pants, who really cares? I'm willing to bet that most of you don't shop at J.Crew, but if you did (or do), then you would know the quality is great, regardless of if they edit the picture for asthetic purposes.
