Under 30. Really can't see anything wrong here...

Wesley said...

The larger turntable is flipped, I guess.

Bill Purdy said...

Ahh! Yes!

At least (part of) the title's accurate.

Adam said...

At a guess – it's that it's flipped. Lazy layout work, but not exactly a *Photoshop* disaster, if that's all it is.

Elnzaod said...

Over 30 too. LOL!!!

nesto said...

30 on the nose, not seeing the problem. Though a dust cover is NOT a $20 value.

raw by default said...

I'm over 30. The only thing I can see is that the record looks a bit small to be a 33 1/3 rpm. It looks more like a 45 rpm... which would be kind of useless for most people. Most of my LPs are the big ones!

Julie said...

I'm 30 on the nose and if it's not the flipping problem I have no idea what's wrong.

sebaxtian said...

With this device you can rip your vinily backward and hear the 'subliminal message' on it.

The arm is at the wrong side!!!

Andrés Diplotti said...

I'm exactly 30, and I took a few moments to see it.

Then it hit me. It's designed to play the subliminal messages in rock music!

raw by default said...

For some reason, I thought the arm was on the other side. LOL... I have to go check my player.

Andrew said...

GEnerally speaking, records spin clockwise, and the needle comes in from the right so that the disc spins away from the needle, not towards it.

I'm old.

ShinjiPG said...

I'm under 30 and I noticed the arm is on the wrong side, even tho it's correct on the small pic. I can't spot the photoshop tho.

ShinjiPG said...

Doh, flip.

Lance Christopher said...

how do you know the image is displaying the front and it's not just taken from the back angle..??

the record could technically still spin in the correct direction...

Atanas Boev said...

Really!! I'm 32 and I was "ouch". My wife, 25, was like "whats wrong?"

Didn't know generation gap is so pronounced.

Jan Andrea said...

I'm 34, but it did take me a minute.

Yeah, I played my parents' LPs. And I had "Thriller" as a vinyl record, back when the choices were cassette tape or vinyl.

God, I am old.

bwross said...

@Lance:

Nope. Back angle or front, the only way the record spins in the "correct" direction for that arm is widdershins... which will play albums backwards.

James Austin said...

27. It took me a while.

\/\//\ Wim said...

re's nothing wrong with this picture. Everyone knows that when you play a record backwards, you'll hear the Devil speak His tongue. Well, this turntable is used to let everyone hear His voice by playing all records backwards. What's so hard to understand about that?

El Jefe said...

Given that the needle would be pushed against the record rather than across the surface, that 'rip' you hear won't be into an MP3 format, more into a broken needle/scratched record.

glovercom said...

You're gonna NEED that dust cover when you're done with it, since you'll never need it again!

dontachos said...

18. Thank God for users' comments XD

Peter Marquardt said...

I'm 25, but I've handled quite some vinyl from my parents and siblings.

Chris said...

I'm 33, and I noticed the needle was on the wrong side but I wasn't entirely convinced that they *couldn't* be on that side.

marcthinks said...

I'm 28 and saw that it's flipped... Is that all what's wrong?

gabrielm said...

28 and I thought it was flipped, but did a search to make sure. Here is the original photo for reference:

It's not a disaster. This is the Jerry Falwell model.

starr said...

under 30..

and what is that black, circular thingy?? that's a pretty large CD

lol j/k

Yfsserretteffa said...

The real problem is not that it was designed to play records backwards, it's that they didn't put anything to catch the needle when it runs off of the outside of the record at the end ;)

BTW if you DO want to play records backwards, this method works. I made one once, but not this nice. If you play records backwards on an ordinary turntable, the forces on the needle are wrong, and it damages your records.

catoblepas said...

Ad was obviously mdae by somebody under 30. Unless the machine is designed to play records backwards.

Adam said...

33 - saw the problem right away. Actually, like many others, I saw the potential right away.

Alicia said...

Under 30 and knew the problem right away ;)

Dave said...

38. It doesn't matter which direction the arm is; the only way to get it to play "backward" is to make the record revolve the wrong way. I seriously had a 45 (won't mention any names *ah-CHOOvillagepeople*) that would only play without skipping when the arm was twisted the wrong way. Something profound there, but I don't know what it is.

Dan said...

I don't understand why people think they're so old because they've used vinyl. I'm seventeen and I LOVE spinning vinyl. But I'm an aspiring DJ so I guess that's different...?

Leslie said...

22, and my teeth are hurting.

savizzaviz said...

21 with a turntable sitting right next to me. (And we're not even going to mention the Laserdisc player below it.) Took me a second, but I didn't even have to turn my head to verify—what a painful realization.

savizzaviz said...

Also, that's just for playing the B-side, right?

Under 30. No clue what was going on.

though with an image like this you'd have to really question WHY they would even bother to flip it.

I'm 24. didn't noticed what was wrong. thanks for explaining it, you over 30 people are cool :)

must say the description 'over 30-under 30' was spot on.

Maandag said...

Under 30. Many thanks for the explanations over-30's. Currently listening to Me and Julio down by the schoolyard which did sound miles better on vinyl ;-).

I think I'm just about ready to unsubscribe from this blog.

cipher said...

the turntable is meant to be operated from the "right" side. the photographer should have turned it 90 deg clockwise.

its not so uncommon nower days.

acutally lots of DJs turn regular turntables that way because its easier to scratch without touching the tone arm.

cipher said...

... needless to say that it is more "intuitive" when its spins that way if you are looking from the the "right" side.

... for those >30. Welcome to the 21st century ;)

I'm 47, I own nearly 2000 LPs, and I've spent the past 4 years digitalizing them, and when I saw they picture I was horrified. My albums have been played exactly twice--when I taped them to cassette 20 years ago and then when I burned them.

I was once in a "record" store and overheard two teenage girls: one said, "Paul McCartney--he was in some band before he was in Wings, right?" And that was 20 years ago.

It's time for my Geritol now

Judy said...

Whoops, my wife was still signed in. Ah well, sorry.

23, with a record collection that's bigger than yours, and that's totally OUCH.
I'd like to play my records, thank you very much.
Small mistake it may be, it changes the ad from "you want this product" to a form of DO NOT WANT usually accompanied by cats and/or broccoli

Alicia said...

I guess this is one of those "backwards playing" turn tables used to glean satanic messages from old Kiss albums.

dustmop said...

Under 30, but I actually *own* one of these, so I saw the problem right away. It's pretty subtle, though.

PET said...

I do not really understand Eddie (the owner of PSD blog). Nowadays, he is not able to post real (!) Photoshop disasters. I used to send him quite lot disasters many months ago. No answer... Then I sent them new ones again... and again... and... I think there are large amount of real disasters! There is no need to post such tiny mistakes. Post mine instead!

The Mushroom said...

Anyone who thinks this isn't a disaster is under 30. Tchoh.

Yes, the image was flipped -- records turn clockwise, therefore the armature is on the wrong side. Try playing a record with the needle being forced into the groove rather than being dragged through it and tell me that ain't a bad thing!

Also figured the LP on the turntable looked small but either the record player is bigger than usual or, following Aerosmith's advice, they grabbed the ten-inch record off the wall...

Kimizzy said...

26 and I was looking at my screen like Paris Hilton being asked how many sexual partners she's had.

Thanks for the enlightenment. :)

tim maguire said...

At 42, I still have and use a turntable. I immediately spotted the under-sized LP but only knew something was wierd with the player. Couldn't put my finger on quite what until reading these and (slaps forehead) duh!

Fun to read some of the 20-somethings here who have it explained to them and still can't quite get it. Of course, their excuse is better than mine. They're lame-os who were never and will never be DJs, not even at their own party.

John L. said...

17. Didn't see it at all! D'oh.

Stef said...

I'm 32 and used to listen to quite a lot of vinyl but I didn't catch the problem ... the key is I haven't listened to anything on vinyl in probably 15 years so I don't remember much about how record players work, I guess.

renatotarga said...

Oh, no. It doesn't have anything to do with anyone's age.

The problem is that it would rotate at 33 1/3 rpm to the wrong side (the reason for the -33 1/3).

LOL flip. Phail. Also, is it just me, or is the front of it not touching the surface? it looks like it's kind of floating there.....

Etni said...

Took me a while - I thought there would be something else wrong in the photo. Technically, the arm could be on the left side as well.

I just don't get why anyone would want to flip the original photo.

Oskars said...

24. I thought it's flipped, but wasn't sure. haven't used such a thing since I was 5 :)

Thomas Westgard said...

Brookstone is kind enough to offer turntables for left-handed vinyl as well as right-handed vinyl. Format wars have been around for a long time, and just as there are still people who need to have their Betamax tapes read, there are people who need both of the record-players shown here.

Photographer Leia said...

I'm going with the arm is on the wrong side. All the turntables I've had (yes I'm in the under 30 category) had an arm on the right. I AM however wondering where they chose the record speed as there are no discernable dials or buttons to chose between a full sized LP/45/whatever. Isn't that usually at the front where it can be easily reached? Or do these ripping ones have those controls on a computer software.

Koselara said...

Almost 32, couldn't tell what was wrong with it... But then again, I got my music as a kid by tape-recording radio & MTV; by the time I wanted full albums, CD players were inexpensive enough for me to get one as a birthday present. :-p

beaches_dude58 said...

Crap I'm 50 and it took me a long while to figure out what was wrong. It didn't look right but I couldn't put my finger on it.

I'm going to blame all the dope I smoked when I used to play my Alan parsons Project LPs.

halibutt said...

28. Obvious for me. GF's 22. Perfectly ok for her.

Christopher said...

I'm 29.

And whoever said it's taken from the backside didn't realize that

A: the needles would not be facing you from the back.
B" The buttons were still on the front.
C: Most important, the record would still spin in the same direction. Records don't magically spin the other direction just cause you turned the player 180 degrees.

Sofar said...

I kind of straddle the line. My teeth were hurting, but I couldn't figure out why they were hurting until someone told me.

Any particular reason why just any old turntable couldn't be used to record to your computer? Unless this one's U.S.B.

Kyle said...

um..am i the only one who sees the left side FLOATING? ....

regardless of the pegs it may be on, there's definitely some disparity between the left side and the right.

28: It took me a second. Not to make the >30's feel old, but the only record player I ever had said "Fisher Price" on the side. Anybody else remember those read-along records that were 33 1/3 but were the size of a 45? "When you here this sound *ding* it's time to turn the page!"

To answer a few of the questions regarding this particular turntable...

Yes, it's USB. The setting for record speed is located near the head of the stylus. You can choose between 33.33 and 45. However, with the software, you can also choose 78. You'd play your 78 at 33.33 and then convert it via software.
