Annie Liebowitz is the master of assembling separate images of people into a single image. Take, for instance, this shot of Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet. You can hardly tell that the two were photographed separately. Except for Sam Mendes wearing a coat on one arm. And not the other.
Thanks to Andreina! Original is here!

Have you seen a truly awful piece of Photoshop work? Clumsy manipulation, senseless comping, lazy cloning and thoughtless retouching are our bread and butter. And yes, deep down, we love Photoshop.
If it is commercial and awful then please let us know! Anonymity can be arranged for the easily embarrassed/canned.

hee!
Not a disaster; the single sleeve coat is going to be the next big thing in fashion.
the photo looks fine to me. I don't see any "Photoshop disaster" in this one...
haha! if it weren't for that pesky sleeve, it'd be pretty well done...
See also the video of the photo shoot:
http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid9943461001?bclid=9860066001&bctid=10272035001
Also, her right shoulder seems to be intersecting his chest. I'm not seeing much affection in this picture.
I didn't notice this the first time I saw the picture. Really, is it that hard to get a husband and wife to show up for a photoshoot together? Geez.
Okay... so they were actually there together... but still.
i didn't think that was a PSD when I saw it, just one of a number of shots where coat was on, then taken off over the course of the shoot. The video proves that they were together. Nice catch, haypo.
guys its actually a blanket and not his sleeve. If you watch closely you can see the blanket on Kate's arm, under his fingers. She's half wrapped in it.trapp
nansuli if you watch the video haypo linked to you'll see that it is in fact a jacket.
so if you watch that video, he's wearing the jacket in some of the shots. Pretty hard to comprehend how such a high-end photographer's work could end up like this. Do I see some kinda strange masking around the top of her hair (lighter than background)?
1. What happened to her right shoulder and arm?
2. How short is his left humerus supposed to be?
Breaking news: actor manages to remove jacket after short video shoot.
Earlier today, idiots on the popular blogging site 'Photoshop Disasters' were apparently confused by the near superhuman feat performed by actor Sam Mendes, as he partially removed his jacket following a video diary snippet which clearly shows him wearing it in the customary manner. It appears Mendes couldn't manage to shed the garment entirely, so was forced to leave one arm in its sleeve and wrap its body around co-starring actress Kate Winslett. It seems that even the jacket's rough material and different shade managed to fox the regulars, leading them to believe that it was an oversight by accomplished photographer and composite artist, Annie Leibovitz.
Liebowitz? Rilli?
So is the thing he's holding with his left hand a prosthetic extension to make his right arm twice as long as it would normally be, or is it a convenient pillow that they happened to dress in the same fabric as his shirt?
Hey, at least Kate's got a top on in the photo. To quote the late Mr. Cranky movie review of an older film of hers:
Incidentally, I am sick and tired of seeing Kate Winslet naked. She may think her nipples are beautiful, but she's not forking over $8 for the privilege of gazing at the freakish things. Have you ever seen a map where a specific region is colored to represent the plague spreading over time? If the tip of Kate's nipple is Paris, the areola is the plague as it spreads inexorably over the rest of France. I see Kate naked and I wonder how the people of Nice could be spared while the poor people of Grasse are wiped out.
that's rough.
One of the other pictures in the set (Heath Ledger and Christopher Nolan) is correctly identified as a composite. So why not this one? Obviously everybody was going to guess that the Ledger shot was a composite.
She's wearing a hooded jersey.
He has his arm under the hood.
Never mind the coat, what is he holding? It looks like it's supposed to be his wrist/forearm but if so he has some very strange body geometry!
Thanks, haypo, for the video link. (slightly)less cynical and guccigirl73 got it right: she's wearing a hooded jacket and his arm is under the hood. This is not a Photoshop Disaster.
Use your eyeballs. His arm is not under the hood. It's through it. You know, like it were a sleeve or something. That, or it's a hood with no back that coincidentally is the same width as an arm instead of a head.
Just because Mendes and Winslet were on set together doesn't mean a shot of them is not a composite. Shot are often composited because the photographer didn't get the exact look they wanted.
I think you should remove this post.
When I first saw that picture, I was about to send it to you, but I later saw the video so... It LOOKS like a PS (not D for me), but it is not.
Where are you people getting this hood and blanket lunacy from?! Is a coat sleeve just too simple an explanation? Just watch the bloody video.
Sam Mendes is a director. Revolutionary Road, Oscars... Hellooo?
And yes, his arm goes through the sleeve/hood/ whatever.
Yup, I thought the same as guccigirl73, she is wearing a hooded sweater. The hood is the same color as the rest of her sweater. So there is no error here.
Perhaps it's work like this that has caused Annie to pawn the rights to her entire life's work.
http://www.walletpop.com/blog/2009/02/25/photographer-annie-leibovitz-overexposed-is-forced-to-sell-her/
Did any of you blanket/hood advocates actually watch the video? There's no blanket (and I'm almost certain there's no hood on Kate's top- pause it when she stands up and see what you think). Sam's wearing a jacket. It has sleeves. Two of them. His left arm, in its sleeve, is draped around her shoulder. In this particular shot, he's not wearing the jacket, but the suspiciously sleeve-like thing around his arm is spookily exactly like the actual sleeve of the jacket he wears in the video. Of course he might have taken the jacket half-off and left one sleeve on for no good reason...
Hooded sweater? No way. Take a close look--Kate's sweater is extremely thin and lightweight. Even if it had a hood (and it appears not to), that hood would be lying absolutely flat against her back--no way it would find itself above Sam's arm. Second--take a look at the texture/color of Sam's jacket sleeve, versus Kate's sweater. His jacket sleeve is clearly heavier and lighter colored than what she's wearing.
The coat is the least of it. There's something seriously wrong with both their shoulders and upper arms.
Leibovitz is more of a brand than a photographer these days. She oversees the shoot, dictates lighting and things, and then sends her "assistants" off to do the comp work more often than not.
It looks like he's holding his own second left arm.
Nope, definitely disaster. Light's weird, masking is crude, bodies don't match up. Look, I know Liebowitz owes half of you money, but Vanity Fair lost 15% of their circ and ad revenue last year, so they're cutting bigtime corners.
I'm really, really sorry I watched the video, I just lost my breakfast. Be warned, it is nauseating.
Fortunately, Eden's comment cheered me right up.
"It looks like he's holding his own second left arm."
first the queen of england and now this!! i shudder for the future
The sad thing is is that they were in the same room, and from the looks of it were posing pretty similarly to this through the entire video. I'd rather have a photo that didn't look quite the way I wanted then this photoshopped mess.
This is GOLD. Great find. And the video back-up is priceless.
And the fact that this didn't just come from a hack PS'er in a basement cranking out catalogs makes it even better.
I gotta say the left arm looks like it's too short by half. Even with foreshortening, I'm not seeing this pose quite possible...
I know I'm usually the skeptic here, but I'm not buying the hoodie/blanket reasoning, people.
"Just because Mendes and Winslet were on set together doesn't mean a shot of them is not a composite. Shot are often composited because the photographer didn't get the exact look they wanted."
EXACTLY. Kate must have looked better in a jacket shot, Sam looked better in one of the no-jacket shots, so they were comped. Simple as that. No blanket, no hooded sweater, no half-on-half-off jacket.
Yea, plus look at where his arm comes from behind her head and look where his left shoulder SHOULD be. The two figures aren't from the same shot. Everyone who thought it was a hood or blanket is ridiculous and clearly wrong since they posted AFTER the video was.
This just shows how many people on here have a kneejerk "not a disaster" response. They don't read the proof to the contrary and just make up a reason out of thin air that we know is false. You guys infuriate me.
You see, it looked bad to me BEFORE I noticed the coat sleeve.
This raises the bar for the "It's not a disaster" pondlife. Can you also see the face of Jeebus in the hood on her sweater? Sheesh.
I haventt watched the video 'cos I can't be arsed. However, to those of you claiming that this is not a disaster, look again and consider the following:
1) What on earth is he holding?
2) Where the hell is the rest of the right side of her body? It seems to have disappeared!
3) I've never before seen anyone's neck sit just so in relation to their shoulder, assuming that is what one can see on her right side.
4) What on earth (or why on earth) has he got on his arm or his arm in? It looks like a sleeve and not a hood.
5) Light is wrong in places, composition is flawed yada yada yada. I'll stop now.
As I said, I've not watched the vid' as I don't feel it is worth while. What I do know is this picture is a monumental cock-up!
FYI--VF has now clipped the photo so Sam's right arm is no longer visible, making Annie's mistake a little less obvious. Wonder if they caught it in time to keep it out of the magazine.
Forget the disaster, the blue tint looks terrible. I guess it's supposed to look artistic, but it just makes the whole picture look cold & emotionless.
This is one of those images that almost works (sleeve notwithstanding). It's all a little wonky.
Well, Annie's distracted lately.
It's not entirely impossible that he's wearing only half the jacket.
After reading all the comments, all I want for Xmas is a cool blue shirt with a sleeve for a collar. It would be so much easier for my husband to keep his arm around my sahoulder that way!
Did you notice? They've changed the photo, doing a zoom into. http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2009/03/actors-directors-portfolio200903?slide=3#globalNav
Hahaha.
if you look close enough and enhance the image you will notice that his shirt is a normal dress shirt but on the other side of his chest it is clearly a darker color and a jacket slit for a pocket is clearly visible. I think you need to look outside the box, or just look closer and you will also notice the collar is shorter and lower on the right hand side of the photo.making a jacket only on the right side possible.
Hi, this is Andreina, the one who submitted the picture to PD's attention :-)
Not only that is a residual sleeve from a different shot of Kate Winslet, but the light looks different on their faces and her right side looks all wrong. I gave just a look at it and noticed it immediately.
How could it be a hood? A hood with a hole in it? :)
It's obviously a pretty bad mistake, but mistake aside, that's a damn fine compilation job there.
I had to look twice, even after you reveald the secret...
scary!
after reading the comments, I must (probably: again) say: I love you all!
and I can see the holy grail in the texture of the sleeve/hood, too!
I just don't like any of this shot. They seem so unattached it's kind of eerie. it makes me a little queasy to look at the photo. She's in front of and to the left of him, and it seems like she's a little off-size or something. There's just issues with this whole shot. I would have used another one.
wv: lyfiltu
Because getting a husband and wife together for a single shot would be so much harder than paying the Photoshop artist to get this wrong...
Maybe its a snuggie
For those who wonder what he's holding...it's clearly her arm.
this is great! I've seen this photo so many times and never noticed!
Well, its not Annie who edit the images, its Pascal Dangin, so he should take the blame for this one, Annie is one AMAZING photographer.
Did Annie Leibovitz really do that? That's HORRIBLE! After that, she owes me money!
They're married??? Are they so averse to occupying the same space for a unit of time???
