Man!, I tought Tatooine only had sand and more sand, and now it turns to be a VERY LARGE beach. Next vacations in Tatooine of course!!

Whiskey and Photoshop....bad mix.

Have Tatooine perpendicular tides? I didn't know that...

What does it cost to travel to this planet? How long does it take to get there?

"The Sunset Restaurant offers a unique setting unmatched in Southern California."

Adam said...

Maybe it's a very oddly-positioned mirror?

Antar said...

It seems like all the wall is doubled. Sun, waves, window, pillows...
I guess what was there instead.

Antar said...

Now that i look better, it's just a mirror from the column right (as Adam suggested).

Seems no photoshop here...

Andy Moore said...

looks like a mirror to me. Everything is duplicated.

Nerte said...

You had me for a while with the mirror theory, but when you look at the pillows, I'm not sure it's possible.

Bill In Asheville said...

if it is a mirror, wouldn't the sun be smaller? the old 1/2 size thing and all

and what about the pillars and the light being the same?

MJ said...

I'm pretty sure that's a mirror. As in, an actual mirror. The glass dish and the chair are reflected perfectly.

Spinoza said...

That's obviously done on purpose. No PSD this time, I'm afraid.

David said...

It is a mirror. I had real difficulty finding the plane of reflection, but it's on the far right hand wall behind (and parallel to) the rightmost cushion, which you can see reflected with the cushions around it. For the terminally pedantic it may not satisfy their particular criteria for a Photoshop disaster, but it is a dreadful, dreadful image to allow through, good for a laugh, and worthy of Cosmo's heading.

Personally I think that image 12 in the set is a PSD - as in, genuinely photoshopped past the point where it makes any sense. No sun at that point on the horizon would either provide that much light or cast shadows of that length. Plus you can see the join. IMHO.

Eduardo said...

No way, Jose!

Any doubts, look at the photo nÂș12, a cozy wedding on Mars!

PSD, I'm sure!

TornadoBaby said...

The mirror doesn't seem to be at the right angle to have the sun in that spot, but other things do line up... tough call.

adler said...

i'm not sure this is a mirror, i mean, would it really reflect the sun at that angle? it would reflect the room, all right, but not the sun...
image 12 is not a Photoshop Disaster, it's a Photoshop Apocalypse.

Eduardo said...

Pay atention to the differences on the "shine" of the chairs, and how the bananalike leaves doesn't make any reflections at all...

P.S.: Sorry for my rusty English - I'm brazilian.

Angela said...

On the site photo number 4 shows that there is actaully a mirror in this right corner.

But! In the shot posted here, if you look at the "reflection" of the tops of the pillows you clearly can see this is just a flipped section from the left side of the photo.

Badly recreated reflection that doesn't look anything like a reflection = disaster.

John Braine said...

It's The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe innit?

Steve said...

Prime surf conditions too. The wave's converge at a perfect angle!

Eduardo said...

I disagree with Angela: the photo nÂș4 proves there's no mirror!

Blade said...

It's a mirror, that is totally obvious.

chershey said...

Dude, that's just a mirror. Fail.

Manny said...

They definitely used Photoshop. Look at Google maps - street view (it is tricky to located based on the address), the water is not even that close to see the waves break. You can barely see the waves.

Manny said...

WTF - look at photo 12 on their slide show. I think they used mirrors to create that sunset too.

Christopher said...

The photo number 4 shows the ceiling fixture comes down to a decorative point. In the photo in question (number 2), the fixture is cut off bluntly right at the line where they have pasted the image.

Kitty said...

Okay. Please read this. XD

YES, there is a mirror there, as evidenced by #4.

YES this is still a PSD, because number 4 also shows us a tree in the "daytime" shot, that is conspicuously absent in the sunset shot.

Also, given where the mirror is on the wall, it should not be reflecting the sun and beach like it is, it should be reflecting much further down the beach. The ocean is far closer to those windows then it should appear...

Another thing, look at the shadows cast by the furniture and pillows; the light source, if it is a setting sun, should be in the far left of the windows.

Lastly, image #19 shows the front of the building, where the tree in #4 is magically missing...

I must conclude that this room, with it's mirror, is actually in the back of the building, not even facing the ocean, but because that would make a very boring image some genius thought to add the water and sunset, along with a reflection of said sunset to cover their fakery.

Thomas Westgard said...

This is one of the best PSDs!

Scott said...

There's a mirror, but it's set back further than what we're seeing from this angle. They PS'd in a new view anyway. You have to look at the original, and peel back the overlay on the right side. What happened to the palm fronds that overlap the "mirror"?

ZaphodQB said...

if it's a mirror then there is still a second sun somewhere over or left shoulder.

SchrodingersDuck said...

I've looked and looked and I can't see any possible planes for the mirror. It just doesn't line up.

I swear it is in Mos Isley!

tome said...

Tricky mirror that, goes around corners. Or maybe that mirror sees another mirror that catches another one that has the sun reflected in it. Let's draw some diagrams, that's always fun.

Hey if you look really carefully you can see your face in it!

Look at picture #13. This is even worse. Their sun seems to grow in the afternoon...
At least they´ve got some nice music.

curvature said...

whether or not it's a mirror, they've obviously shopped in the view outside the windows on both sides - badly.

Maybe the mirror was originally in the shot, but reflected something they didn't want in the image, like a waitress walking past or the photographer's arm or something

I guess we'll never know (sigh)

Otney said...

Well, maybe a mirror but two suns is just silly. But you must give yourself the vertiginous treat of photo #12...oh, my, my, my, go to the restaurant's web site and check out "photo" #12. Little Photo Shop of Horrors, as already noted by Dave, Eduardo and Manny! Blood red sky with mishapen phony ocean horizon hovers over a large wedding apparently being held in the water, or almost.... All the groomsmen look like waiters and some middle-aged guy in a suit in the back of the wedding audience is running for cover.... maybe the restaurant food gave him the trots?

This disaster gets the rating "double star" from me ;)

Great research don by commenters, Google maps and mirror.

Stef said...

Well, they are not too good at filling up windows with sea vistas. Take a look at the windows at the far right of photo n°6. Talking about heavy seas. Those are massive waves out there *cough*

David said...

I'm thinking that Curvature has buttoned it. Good call.

How can people possibly believe there's a mirror there? Seriously? Do they not understand how mirrors work? They can't whisk an image out of nowhere, you know.

gods dj said...

To: The Mirror Brigade
From: Someone with a basic knowledge of Physics

If there was a mirror in place to reflect a view of the sunset, what you would see in the mirror would be the sunset as seen from the position of the mirror. Therefore, you would not see exactly the same wave in front of the sunset as you see by looking directly at the sunset. You would see a reflection of what you would see if you stood exactly where the mirror is.

There may well be a mirror there, but that is definitely NOT what you would see in it.

Photoshop Disaster.

look those waves... is it a tissunami?

Number 12 is hilarious. It has been photoshopped to hell, and yet they decided to leave in the rusty old no parking sign.

Miranda said...

What's it cost for reservations?

lhanna said...

How do you miss something like that?

David said...

I recant. It's meant to look like a mirror, and perhaps there was a mirror there, but the plane of reflection doesn't work. The ertical windowframe in the "reflection" is meant to be the leftmost vertical in the main image. Although the farthest cushions are reflected in the "mirror", they have behind them reflections of cushions that aren't there. These cushions are all leaning against the "real" leftmost vertical.

The cushion layers aren't done too badly, but for the horizon to reflect as it does the mirror would have to be at 45 degrees to the main wall, from the far corner to where the photographer is standing. The two suns is distracting but possible with mirrors, the real error is in the orientation of the waves.

Disaster Caused By Inadequate PhotoShopping Skills.

eroock said...

As mentioned before, photo #4 of their site confirms that no mirror is involved. The fake horizon was poorly pasted in which accounts for the two upper palm tree leaves being cut off while the lower one stayed intact.

Susy said...

I've been to that restaurant before and there is no mirror there. So that confirms this picture is a PsD.
No. 12 is also a major flub.

Sérgio said...

One giveaway is the leafs of the plant. The two leafs that intersect with the "mirror" are cut, probably do to the mirror layer having a straight edge (is it that hard to use a mask?). There are also some artifacts along the edge of the wood column that is behind the plant that make it obvious that it is indeed shopped.
Another giveaway is the missing tip of the chandelier, look at picture #4 to see how it really looks like.
This is definitely a PSD

Enia said...

@Fakename you can see also in pic #16, the horizon on the right has been flipped and duplicated

Jolene said...

WOW! i thought one sun is burning hot, and now we have two.... oh look, the sea waves are rushing in!

Tatooine's Best Restaurant XD
Best title ever!

nyrn said...

the picture is not taken during sunset, but rather in the afternoon with light clouds, and the sunset and the ocean shopped in.
Look at the overexposed windowframes, colourtemperature completely of compared to "lightsource", also note the soft shadows from the pillows and the soft white light falling on the pillows...

Khadija Ejaz said...

Is the area to the right of the pillar a mirror?

arbernaut said...

It took about five seconds to realise that this is a mirror, not a Photoshop Disaster.

Nerte said...

People who think it's a mirror, can you draw me into the picture where the mirror actually is?

No, I don't get it.

Joel Atkinson said...

Seriously not a mirror.

The seating on the right of the pillar below the window is consistent with the rest of the image in lighting and position. Just behind it you can see the tops of the cushions pasted in and flipped from the left side of the image along with the window scene, lit incorrectly.

Owretchedman said...

@arbernaut

Then look at it longer than 5 seconds. Mirrors dont cut the leaves off of plants, bad pasting does.

MTNotes said...

eh, but tatoonie DOES have two suns, although they look different in the famous clip from episode 4 of Luke gazing out on them/his destiny...

Nick Noehm said...

A mirror on that wall IRL or not, the image is a PSD:

a) real mirrors don't cut off the bottoms of light fixtures or the tips of plant leaves, as earlier posts pointed out

b) real mirrors don't reflect the far side of the pillars between the windows

c) the "always-half-size-in-the-mirror" applies to you looking at your own relection, and to no other reflection. So the size of the reflected sun is a problem. The light reaching the camera directly from the sun travelled 93,000,000 miles. The light reaching the camera ostensibly via the mirror travelled 93,000,000 miles plus - let's be generous - 100 feet. So the image in the mirror should be undetectably smaller, by about 1 part in 5,000,000,000.

It is a PSD.

@Phill

Hmmm.. I would think it is because that looks like it was done purposefully with artistic intent.

JackTheWelshman said...

That is a disgusting job!!

I thought it might be a mirror for a second, but then I noticed that its just the image copied again, but made smaller - making the wave look weird, the windows look weird and the result of two sunsets.

ROFL

digitante said...

Allow me to put the mirror issue to rest, as both the original submitter of the image as well as a patron of said restaurant: the whole window shot is Photoshopped, because there's actually a large expanse of beach across from the restaurant. The waves don't come anywhere close to the restaurant, to say nothing of basically washing over your feet as you step out of the front door. And that window does not even FACE west. And then there's the issue of the plane of reflection.

I submitted shot 12 as well, which I thought to be equally frightening - and tended to support the overwhelming theory that there was a considerable abuse of Photoshop going on at this web company.

Case closed guys: NO MIRROR!
Just look at picture No. 4 in their gallery...Same room, different angle, no mirror...It's sad, the original would have been a great shot.

Sam said...

Guys, photo 4 PROVES there is a mirror. It's right there, above the sofa on the left. You can see the reflection of the window frame in it!

The mirror is responsible in photo 2 for the reflections of the exterior of the building - the interior is not reflected, just what's visible through the window.
