Daily Mail: The Scraperboard Of Truth!

When you want to make a point with image manipulation, it's probably a good idea to keep it subtle. If you keep running unsharp mask until you start having LSD flashbacks then you've probably gone too far.

Thank to Andy B! Original is here!

daaaamn! that hair can't be real. And did someone punch him in the eye?

gwy9etc said...

my hair's doing that right now.

iheartfamke said...

his hair looks like, steel or metal, ouch.

Dino said...

No PSD, that's what he really looks like!

Jeremy Clarkson described him brilliantly.

Razgate said...

Ah! he's Scottish, some weird things like that happen to us. :P

What the hell? It looks like they got this picture part of the way through the Edward Gorey filter...

caelum said...

Holy hell. I actually physically recoiled from the screen.

Kasey said...

Way to emphasize the disheveled hair! Unfortunately, now it looks like a woodcut instead of a photo.

This is the reward for retouching at 50 or 25% zooming factor.

He actually does not look human in that picture. I wonder if Gordon really is an alien?

brian t said...

re Gordon's eye: that must be the one that got bashed when he was playing rugby as a teenager. He's been blind in that eye ever since then.

I like to think that the one who made this had an artistic approach

David said...

Well, this is the Daily Mail. Short of painting little snakes' heads at the end of each of those hairs, I think they made the point they were trying to make.

Bugger me! wv: venal! No fucking lie!

Wow. Powerfully understated comment, eh? Nah... in reality, yes, I think a PsD. But I dearly want to see a shot of Bush with hair like this... or Cheney. Perhaps with red eyes, too?

Hi, Here is other Photoshop Disaster

why the designers can do it right?

Elizabeth said...

And they used to say Bill Clinton had Brillo Pad hair.

His hair looks like it came out through the Play-Doh spaghetti factory.

Dario, what's the Psd at

http://www.bocajuniors.com.ar/futbol/ficha/palermo-martin

I don't see anything wrong with that image?
His left foot is on the ground, behind his right which is a little foreshorten because it's angled out towards us because he's swinging it wide to kick the ball. the only photoshop was to extract him from the background.

Josh said...

That guy must destroy pillows.

joe said...

yaaah... i think we are begining to look too hard for psds. its an addiction. yesterday walking thru town i saw like twenty psds... no, not in magazines or posters or billboards, but on live people walking on the streets!!!!!!!!

Ceramix said...

No that's how our Gordon really looks. Honest.

@Dario

Im afraid you fail sir.

The image you linked is a bit of a mind fuck, but there's actually nothing wrong with it technically. It's bad design, but not bad artworking.

I probably would like to know which gel he has used for that metallic look and touch of his beautiful hair!

CJWilly said...

Jesus H. Christ that is *awful*. Or, to paraphrase Churchill, the greatest argument against free speech is 5 minutes reading an average British newspaper..

Joe said...

He has a gray shag carpet for hair!

This is a case of some *nasty* over-sharpening!

Photoxris said...

oversharpen much?

MyVintageCameras said...

My God! When that happens to my photoshop project I step backwards and start again. Who decides if this stuff looks real?

Lisa said...

Wow... that looks like Tim Burton's nightmare...

Current Resident said...

I don't understand. I can't even fathom why someone would do this.

The Sophisticate's Diary said...

Just when I thought the Daily Mail couldn't possibly get any shitter.

The readership will almost certainly find a way to blame this on immigration. Or gays.

tim maguire said...

It would be pretty kick-ass if my hair could do that! He looks like Tim Burton character.

Val said...

The fact that the PSer didn't take the time to make the eyebrows match is the real disaster.

emily's chacha said...

Daily Mail's been doing that a lot lately. I think they're using the images which have been corrected for print, online. Because of the nature of newsprint and bleed, it's normal to really oversharpen images for print. But for god's sakes tone a separate copy for the web!

Janne Kauppi said...

Who ever has done that image doesn't probably know what is history brush and how to use it.

ritechus said...

i guess they wanted to make sure it was in focus

Gordon brown texture like sun...

Adam said...

FYI there is a reason the image looks like that. Depending on the process and the stock, that is more or less the correct amount of sharpening to add to an image for a newsprint run. With all the dot gain and ink swell etc., this image would look normal in print. Unfortunately some goomba insisted in using the image that has already undergone pre-press for the newspaper on the Internet. But it's not actually a PsD.

hevoh said...

f*** me the Daily Mail AGAIN. No wonder it has such a reputation for quality and balance.
