Hot Topic: You're So Vein

Now I'm not a judgmental type, but does Hot Topic really want to leave in their model's junkie trackmarks?

Thanks to Diana! Zoomable original is here!

now that's just gross... it looks like the fake scar puddy you get in those cheap halloween costume kits.

Oh yeah, and it's not a PsD, it's a lack of Ps... blah blah blah.

curvature said...

It looks like a burn scar or birthmark. What's the big deal?

leahcharlotte said...

I agree, probably a birth mark.

Kasey said...

I guess the big deal is that it looks bad and they should have "fixed" it.

Sometimes the biggest PSD is not using PS at all!

I'd say it's a bruise. She's probably into restraints.

Mel said...

Wow. PSD are insisting that we airbrush our models into "perfect" specimens? Scraping the barrel much? Come on guys, I know you can do better.

Thomas Westgard said...

Yeah, it looks like a thumbprint bruise to me, which would tend to indicate that she's anemic. Once again, I find myself wanting to buy these models a sandwich.

Mr.SergE said...

Just look at the catalogue. This is an old scar or something. It's quite clear on other pictures of the same model.

Tiffany said...

It almost looks fake to me, like it was added on purpose. Why, I don't know. It also looks like she has scratch (Cut?) marks a little above her elbow.

The vest is edgy, so why not stay in the same vein and not PS the scar.

When nature calls, all she hopes for is a clean toilet. said...

It may be a natural scar, but the point is that it's the first thing I see and I stare RIGHT AT IT. While I agree with Mel about airbrushed models, the image is supposed to advertise style, not druggies. At least that's what this image inadvertently does. So in this case, PsD should have been used.

brazinglish said...

@Domo Kun:

Are you serious?
Did you even bother to take a look at the link you posted?
That is absolutely NOT scarification (not even if she was going for the "my-little-brother-pinched-me-really-hard" look).

The Mushroom said...

It's the opposite of a PsD: It's a lack of Photoshop disaster!

But you make a good point. No matter what that is, trackmark or birthmark or "curling iron burn" *cough* someone should have brushed it out.

crazy-gabrielle said...

Wow. Haha. Is a failure to use Photoshop a Photoshop disaster? I dunno, this is still fun. And ironic. :D

HokieGeek said...

Pretty sure that's just an old scarification.

People don't seem to understand that the point of modeling is to sell clothes. If all the potential customer can look at is the model's bizarre scar/birthmark/tracks, then clothes aren't being sold. If the ad isn't selling the clothes, it's a bad ad. And if the ad could have been selling the clothes if only they used a bit of Photoshop, and they didn't, it's a PsD.

Certainly not a PSD! If this blog is suddenly about pointing out the flaws on the models, just cause the photographer or graphic designer chose NOT from clone it away, then the blog all of the sudden went from "necessary and amusing" and all the way over to the other wing, suddenly sharing categoies with "british tabloid" and the like...

jeffronic said...

I guess, in this case, less isn't more.

The Pirate said...

"then clothes aren't being sold" ...uhh, if you're not buying clothes because of a physical mark on a model, you should probably re-evaluate your priorities. I think it's beautiful. It's just a small reminder that says "hey, I'm real. I'm human. I have a life and a rich history."

The Pirate said...

P.S.

PsD... low blow. This post sucked.

girlrat said...

Maybe she's so hardcore she got a tattoo of a track mark. Or, if she's a typical Hot Topic shopper, she's a cutter.

Kitty said...

Honestly? I show at hot topic, and seeing that mark is not gonna keep me from buying the clothes, if I'm shopping for a top. It looks like an old burn scar, it's not high enough on her arm to be track marks.

Normally I won't vote against the PSDs, but in this case I think you're really reaching.

"Have you seen a truly awful piece of Photoshop work? Clumsy manipulation, senseless comping, lazy cloning and thoughtless retouching are our bread and butter. And yes, deep down, we love Photoshop."

This is not your bread and butter, this is posting for lack of something better to post.

The only disaster here is that it got posted here.

Second phlebotomist here - def. not track marks.

Shooting that low on the arm would just be making things unnecessarily difficult anyways - esp. since she doesn't have prominent veins to begin with.

So now it's a disaster because it's NOT photoshopped ?

dykewife said...

it looks like either a scar or a birthmark. trackmarks are very different from that.

Miss Whorecake said...

Sorry to be the negative type, but not photoshopping something out doesn't constitue as a PSD (well, its your site so I guess you make the rules, but you know what I mean). This is a print disaster, editing disaster, casting disaster ... but its in no way whatsoever a photoshop disaster :/

Thats like calling someone with a really ugly face a plastic-surgery disaster cause they didnt get surgery :/

tome said...

I bought the scar - it was discounted if you paid for a skull candle and some thigh length boots with it.

Very satisfied customer.

Jolene said...

Michael Karnerfors said...

PSD suddenly took a leap over to become like moviemistakes.com, nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking, not that there actually is an error.

Cola said...

It's the virgin mother!

PoPSiCLe said...

1. It's from Hot Topic - a punk/alternative/grunge clothes-store.
2. They use models that fit their profile.
3. That's definitely not trackmarks - as others have pointed out, it looks more like a bruise or infection from a body-piercing gone awry.
4. If it WAS trackmarks, who cares? It would probably fit right into the style of the store (even though it seems a bit too "clean" for it).
5. Do you REALLY think any punk/alternative youngster would care even a LITTE BIT about it if they see the bruise? Nope, not at all.

So, it might have looked better if they photoshopped it out, but then again, they would have photoshopped a perfectly okay picture - me, I prefer stores that just go "ah, that doesn't matter, it's about the clothes, not the model's arm".

NOT a PsD. Except on the part of the PsD-blog. Cause this is a fail, if any.

Wood said...

Also... "Now I'm not a judgmental type, but" ?

Archimer said...

I agree with Mel! I am upset that this image has been posted here to be picked on. Apparently they didn't tart this model out enough to be "attractive." It's cruel to make fun of the things that make us human. It certainly wasn't in the spirit of this blog for this image to be posted.

You can argue all day about whether or not this image should have been touched up to better sell the clothes (and the woman), but I would argue that this photo has no reason to be on a blog called "Photo Shop Disasters."

Owretchedman said...

@ The Pirate

NikkiNicho said...

Why would they shop her face so much and then leave her arm that way?
No matter what it is, it is still hottopic trying to sell some sort of pseudo"bad ass" appeal.
So, take time to shop up the face to look like every other model, but leave the bruise/burn/track-mark/whatever.
Makes about as much sense as the rest of their idiotic marketing ploy.

Kasey said...

In this photo: http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/Apparel/Tops/FashionTops/Red-Splatter-Grommet-Top-230443.jsp

It looks more like a deliberate scarification, maybe an "s." It's certainly not a thumbprint bruise.

Perhaps the PSD in the current pic was blurring the design.

Wow. Defenitely no PS disaster. Not even a try to hide the human side of a model. And for that she ("junkie") and the company gets bashed here. It was a long way from real good PSD to "look, they show real humans, isn't that awful!?". But you have managed it. Shame on you.

heath said...

So I check in for the first time in weeks... and you're complaining that a bruise or birthmark was *not* PS'ed out on a model that's working for a supposedly edgy store?

Weak.

Hot Topic is fake edgy, but at least give them props for keeping the models real.

It's refreshing something like this got left in.. I personally am tired of seeing models airbrushed within an inch of their pixels. I prefer to see a human... not a mockup.

Some of the comments in here are just an echo as to how you have been controlled by the media and lost your own sense of what you think is beautiful and have to be told... you have my pity.

WTF???
So its ok to airbrush 99% of the person and left just one ugly stuff?
HELL NO!
This only make the work bad. If you want to see some ugly girl selling cloths its ok to me, this scar/whatever don't even bother me, but if you gonna winne because you liked this piece just because after remake all the body and face they forgot a pankake on her arm you think this is beautiful and humam.. geez...

Just want to point out that being judgemental about models having physical blemishes is not the same as being judgemental about ordinary people. They're models. It's their JOB to look perfect (and the job of photographers, makeup artists, etc. to assist).

She may or may not be a junkie, but that's not a track mark. I used to be a substance abuse counselor. Trust me--not track marks. Nice use of slander (or is it liable when it's in print), thought? :)

Diane said...

I am flabbergasted by the number of people who thought the "Track marks" comment was serious. PsD is a snark blog, a very sarcastic one at that. When have the comments ever been serious?

As for whether it's a disaster or not - as a few people have mentioned already the purpose of a clothing model is to display the clothing, and to be as "perfect" as possible. Bruises like this are indeed distracting and detract from the purpose of the image. The fact that we're all here yammering and nitpicking about that proves it. Has one person here mentioned the shirt she's attempting to promote?

jackie31337 said...

I don't know about Hot Topic, but Torrid (which is owned by Hot Topic) uses local people or their own staff as models, rather than professional models. I'm not surprised she doesn't look model perfect, but I do agree that whatever that is on her arm distracts you from the thing they're trying to sell.

lysolbean65 said...

None of you are the target audience for Hot Topic, so your opinions of what's "gross" and distracting on a Hot Topic model really don't matter. Torrid doesn't airbrush their models super-thin, because their customers aren't thin.

My 15-year-old niece and nephew are gloomy, "edgy", "gothy" teens who love Hot Topic... and they think the idea of showing a "flaw" on a model is pretty cool. I guess this "disaster" did it's job.

Before criticizing something, stop being so self-important and consider if it's even meant for you. Not everything is.

Tim said...

they photoshopped the picture now. they probably saw this post.

Josh said...

From what I know about Hot Topic's brand, it seems like they wouldn't mind having models that have ambiguously drug-doing visual cues because their target audience would think it's 'cool.'

That is a keloid scar. Most people with keloid scars do all they can to hide them, because they are big and weird looking and don't look at all like normal scars (and people like JR call them "gross'). I say kudos to the model for baring it and kudos to Hot Topic for showing it.

I'm not a phlebotomist, but I am a junkie, so I feel qualified to say that people totally shoot lower down on the arm. That isn't an example of track marks, true, but not because of the location, just because track marks don't look like that.

The people giving "kudos" to Hot Topic for "keeping it real" here are ignoring the fact that Hot Topic is a brand completely devoted to manufacturing a contrived and ham-fisted sense of rebellion and "edginess". They aren't "real" in any sense of the word.

Also, I agree with everyone about the scar taking focus away from the product you're trying to sell. By all means let her be a model, she's fine otherwise. If you want people to actually pay attention to your clothes, however, then they'd best do a little touch-up in Ps. No harm in it.
