Netto: I Could Design This With My Eyes Shut!

At least I think it's Netto. To be frank it feels faintly absurd to pore over a picture trying to determine which Danish supermarket the image came from when the designer who produced the item in question evidently subscribed to a slightly inferior level of attention to detail. Just saying.

Thanks to Martin!

What exactly is the product in question? I can't even tell.

I don't understand...
What's wrong with this picture? Where is the "disaster"?

I'm so used to seeing iStock watermarks in my comps, it took me 10 minutes to figure out what was wrong. (I'm going to be on PSD one day)

Pine-flavored lunch meat? I wonder if the knots are chewy...

They guy failed twice! Not only did he steal the artwork, he stole the WRONG artwork!

My guess is mock-up gone wrong. Inexcusable none the less

just like Marlon said haha

Looks like the kind of rollers you use to apply paint. Or in this case some sorta tree preservative.

How do you submit a disaster?

I just found a peach of a disaster.

An easy mistake to make. Inexcusable, but easy.

It says Netto right there under the bar code. But what the frag is it supposed to be?

Still not as bad as Ubisoft leaving it on their game covers, if you ask me (most of the comments for that one say it was just for the mock-up, but I saw them on shelves all over London).

Also, word verification: pedgitie

It says 'made FOR Netto', not made BY Netto. Still Netto should consider if they want to contract with companies that deliver this level of quality...

I would never have heard of iStockphoto if it wasn't for people ripping off their images like this.

I wonder if they gain more from the advertising than they lose from the lost sales.

for those who can't find the disaster, i will give you a hint. this is not an ad for a package of istockphoto.

Honey, I asked you to buy maple, not pine. You know it gives me gas.

This one seems sort of... implausibly ridiculous. Honestly, it kinda strikes me as a photoshop triumph more than an actual disaster.

Well, Netto is not half that bad concerning product design in Germany (where their origin is). I had the honor (yes, it is a honor xD) to pass a internship in the advertising agency they engaged to do the packaging for their store brand "Netto Premium" and help doing the layout work for Netto. And I got to say, the work they did was astonishing considering they only designed for a store brand. So, what I want to say is that, even if they do not reach Marks & Spencer, they put much effort into their product design.

It's not a PSD. Those paint rollers just have an imprint with iStockPhoto on them. Fail.

wv: meeprod .... that's what she said.

For Million Dollar Baby

iStock photo provides sample images with the watermark splashed across them. Business (or individuals) are supposed to pay for the clean image without the watermark. So this company didn't bother to pay for the professional, unmarked image.

@sjvan0

When we say they're mockups, we mean an accidentally submitted mockup instead of the final version; not that they aren't on the shelves. Just to clear that one up.

So basically a project manager or similar will have sent the mockup instead of the final composition to the printer/client etc., somehow no one noticed, then it ends up in the public domain, watermarks 'n' all.

@Marie Dees

It's quite common for studios to use the watermarked image in mockups, so that the licensed image can be bought once approved. This kind of thing is never intentional, its a production mistake, rather than a photoshop error.

Lets face it, any artworker/designer could remove the watermark on most images quite easily; they purchase for the legal right to use it, not to get rid of the watermark. The watermark is simply to prevent amateur use and hotlinking.

However, this can't be guaranteed, it might have just been produced in a massive rush by a complete fool, but it seems very unlikely.

What is it?? I have no idea.

Much the same as the reaction I had for this YouTube game. What the christ?

I just can't believe the crap photo we're looking at is on iStockphoto. Whether it's a disaster or not, it doesn't look like anything anyone would ever use for anything. Horrible.

Yes you do.

And yes.

i couldn't understand it at first. after looking at the comments here, i'd say its not much of a photoshop disaster here, but its pretty much of a disaster to be put on selves for the public to purchase. i agree with what N. had said in the earlier comments.

darkrayne999 said...

Has anyone noticed that the pattern is strikingly similar to the piece of board above the plastic, but flipped? Or maybe my eyes just aren't registering it right.

Neon Principle said...

Looks like a mock up to me, not an actual product.

ryoko said...

Wow. Just last night I saw a commercial on dish network of all places that used images jacked from istockphoto to make up the commercial. i was astounded at the stupidity. nobody ever even attempts to remove the watermarks.

Very interesting :D

I agree to Dave - it took me a moment to even SEE the mistake; so used to that watermark all over my mock-ups.

Lcukily, I don't do this for money; no chanse ending up here. :)

Interesting. I took this photo and put it on Failblog and now its here. At least its getting recognition for its supreme fail. :) Thanks for posting!
