When I first saw it I though it was a good PsD, but after seeing this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/33545213@N08/3567760367/) I have my doubts...

she must have a light bulb for a bunny tail also. There is something going on back there.

ha ha ha.. should have gone to specsavers...

Kitty said...

@pajuaba That's clearly what they were going for, but to have her butt up in the air like that her thighs would have to be closer together. Look at the Monroe pic, and where ther thighs meet, her whole upper body is jutted out to create that position. Lettuce girl's upper body appears to be straight up, and her legs aren't close enough together... unless she has some WEIRD bow-legged issue going on, and even then I don't think it would cover that cap.

jk said...

The dress is so well done, it's a shame they messed up at the end with the legs.

Not a disaster... you idiots have no clue about anatomy.

Chakolate said...

Isn't the 'Marilyn' shot also shopped? That's not the original, for sure.

Fili said...

The correct translation is:

LOSING WEIGHT
can be delicious!

roballen said...

@ fili:

She's definitely lost weight - an entire leg has been severed! The lettuce dress, however, does look delicious.

Jérem' said...

Where's the disaster here?

N. said...

Ye ... although it looks off, therefore making it a bad choice of image, I think its totally plausable that the anatomy is accurate. Just take the image into PS and draw in the hips yourself ... oh wait, none of you halfwits have ever used photoshop :/

Seriously though ... possibly a triumph of lettuce photoshopping if anything ... no disaster im afraid.

Try again and better luck next time.

N. said...

PS, if you're still confused the reason it looks weird is they high waistline and up-turn of the dress, it creates a crazy optical illusion. If your minds are powerful enough try to imagine that the dress isn't there, and the waistline is lower.

again ... bad choice of image, and I agree it doesn't work; but this is actually a pretty well shopped image ... ironically.

Andy said...

N. - are you nuts?!

The angle she'd have going on under there is totally impossible, it's pretty much 45 degrees; she'd have to be leaning forward a hell of a lot for that kind of angle and she isn't. She'd also have to have an arse about a quarter the size of a normal person.

She's also got a gigantic foot, an incredibly lengthy left shoulder, an overly extended lower leg and is missing the top of her head. While the latter is a comping issue, it's a pretty bad one.

I'd say it adds up to a pretty major disaster.

morgedoid said...

Man if you can't spot there is no disaster here you better hit a blog where visual dexterity is not a necessary trait. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this image, although at first it actually fools you into seeing otherwise. Her butt is jutting out backwards and to her right. That's all.

André Toledo said...

Translation is wrong!

Veja means samething like "look" or "see"!

The sentence "Emagrecer pode ser uma delícia" can be translated as "To get thin can be delicious", as you can see there is nothing about iPod!

I've sent this for you too, and, if my memory doesn't fail, the translation was in the same e-mail.

Danny Andrijanic said...

Think I prefer it this way. Think of the possibilities. Random legs would be so useful in everyday life.

P.S. W.R.T. "André Toledo's comment": It's all parden my spanish "culito inteligente" and comedy "mejilla lengua". Smartarse mofos done know about my Google translate.

It´s not Spanish, it is Portuguese! If you had used google or yahoo translator the mistake is explained!

VEJA is the most important magazine published in Brazil, it's like Times for us, Brazilians, this fate makes this photoshop disaster more funny!

The Veja's website is http://veja.abril.com.br/index.shtml

You can see this disaster on this adress http://veja.abril.com.br/270509/p_072.shtml and click on the link "ver capa" (see cover) in order to view the cover disaster.

The these week Veja's cover is disaster too http://veja.abril.com.br/idade/exclusivo/030609/imagens/capa380.jpg

Maybe you can get a photoshop disaster every single week on veja's website.

Danny Andrijanic said...

That adds a whole other dimension. Yes I did use Google but mixed with a bad memory of both the Spanish and Portuguese languages.

Thanks for the correction. Makes my comments look extra stupid (muito mau.) Which they are.

Veja magazine seams like a fertile ground for photoshop disasters. One should keep their eyes peeled.

Tudo bem?

photoxris said...

is it really broken in two though> that's a dress that cinches just on the bottom of the ribcage/torso. I have no trouble believing that her waist and hips can extend out into where her legs are. It's an unfortunate use of a bad photo, but i don't think it's a PSD. take a screen shot and draw some lines and you'll see what i mean.

@André Toledo,

Yes I see what you mean. They appear to have been a serious editorial in the past but now are solitarily a celeb PR dissemination operation. Sell some adds on the way.

It is sad that much of the world media have come to this but it takes a while for all of those journalists and photographers to found their own sources and start making thier own direct income.

In the meantime as consumers we are left to watch this stuff dissintegrate. It's really sad.

I'm totally convicted that is a disaster, I had the magazine in hands and it's visible wrong!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/33545213@N08/3567760367

In Marilyn's photo her body is more banded to the front, what makes the ass get up in the leg line, she is also in a different angle to left, that improve that ass effect.

The proportion body leg is
striking far from natural.

Seeing magazine alive you can note the line of the body and the dress mixed with the lettuce, sou is easy to percept the disaster, here I'm posting the image drawing the budy line (percepted).

Val said...

Disaster or not, I'd toss that salad.

sitboaf said...

Firstly, the comparison to the Marylin pose isn't fair - Marilyn's torso isn't squared to the camera the way the Brazilian girl's is.

Secondly, ask yourself if it's possible that some art director wanted to fit all those bullet points on one line without writing on the legs.

Thirdly, wv: kreepa (!)

The Sophisticate's Diary said...

I was just about to sneer at the "nothing wrong here" crowd but then I traced the lines of her thighs and hips in PS and, surprisingly enough, it looks fine.

Well, that's one way to get the type & image to fit.

You are now officially prohibited from making bad puns for 7 business days, and therapy is suggested.

heavy-sky said...

i tried to draw in her waist (http://i39.tinypic.com/28mehoy.jpg).
Her leg still looks misplaced to me and actually it would be fine and plausible if her torso was the same as in the marilyn picture - but it isn't.

Lisa said...

If we're to believe that her hip's cocked, then the lettuce leaf skirt's all wrong.

If we're to believe that the skirt's right... then the legs are all wrong.

Take your pick.

N. said...

@heavy-sky

your illustration shows that it looks fine ... no disaster; not the intention of your post, but I'm not quite sure what you think looks wrong with it? She's pulling a pose, a stance that's easily achievable.

You can very easily draw her waist in and it looks absolutely fine. Im surprised so many people are convinced this is a disaster, i was only convinced for a few seconds until I realised it was simply an odd image, not a distorted one.

Go on 'yes men', have a good look, copy it into PS and draw in the lines; If you cant manage to prove yourself wrong then you're on the wrong blog.

N. said...

@Lisa

your right, the skirts not perfect, but it is a pretty good job of a lettuce comp :p Not a disastrous attempt by a long shot.

The body is fine though.

Jedi Man said...

I find it hard to wrap my mind around the fact a lot of people say this isn't a disaster. I happen to be a certified graphic designer and a proud user of Photoshop for at least 10 years, plus I have some anatomy experience due to drawing and working with 3d figures, and I can say without a doubt that this is a notably screw up. Yes, it is emulating Marilyn Monroe, but the examples of the similar pose only further prove it's a disaster. The Veja woman is directly facing the camera, and isn't bent over, she's standing straight. Her legs, however, are not angled in the right way for that pose. The right hand one is completely twisted 90 degrees outward, the only way you could turn your leg to that degree is by popping it out of your pelvis. The right hand leg is instead most certainly from a profile picture of a woman with one foot resting up on something else, like a step or something. The left hand leg faces the viewer dead on, and not only that it's too long. You can extrapolate where the end of the foot is, and you don't even need to draw a line to see how off it is. Comparing it to the picture of Marilyn, you can see how Marilyn's feet are in line, and one doesn't look like it fell in a hole or something. Further, drawing lines to follow her hip line doesn't prove anything. I tried it from her left leg up to her waist, and the curve created is far too much for the slim model AND for the pose the model's in. The right hand leg flows a bit more correctly, but its position in relation to the viewer is not anatomically proper. In summation, this is most certainly a photoshop disaster, not a catastrophic one, but a disaster nonetheless.

talesofawellfedgraphicdesigner said...

Must have been a strong wind to blow her legs away like that.

Lisa said...

If the body hasn't been manipulated, then it's a highly unnatural pose-- in addition to the leg/hip business, the shoulders & head are then rotated to the side.

weird pose + photoshopped lettuce skirt = disaster

N. said...

@jedi-man

lol, 'certified' graphic designer? Well I've also been using photoshop for around 10 years and currently use it for about 8 hours everyday at work; I have a degree in animation which means that I've studied the human form quite a bit, static and in motion. However none of this makes any difference to whether this is a disaster or not.

We can all agree its a bad pose, and yes its different to Marilyn Monroe's, but that doesn't mean its impossible, and its not, its just slightly awkward, a reasonable thing considering she was attempting to imitate a pose, not pull one naturally or under standard photographic direction.

There's a chance this has been manipulated beyond the addition of the lettuce dress, in fact id be surprised if it wasn't; however claims that her legs have been completely hacked and suggestions her legs are 'running away from her body' are so far off the mark the people writing them must struggle to identify their own mothers.

Her stance is awkward, not disastrously manipulated.

It doesn't look quite right, hence the debate, this cannot be argued; I just think its highly unlikely this is due to a terrible job on manipulating her body's shape. At best they've got the completely artificial lettuce dress 'slightly' wrong.

You know its even possible to take photographs that look awkward, it doesn't mean that they've been horribly manipulated. Recognising this is the difference between knowing what you're talking about and blindly following a blog that often gets things wrong.

Guánder Guóman! said...

Hahaha! It took me a while to realize what was wrong with it, because she looks pretty! And the translation is hilarious.

But yes, apparently she was a magician's assistant, she got cut in two but never put back together correctly.

morgedoid said...

@jedi-man

you certainly write a lot for a visual artist 'certified' whatever, but it doesn't amount to proof in any way. It would seem you been studying anatomy in the dark though.
But hey... it's more fun to read what some people think they see than seeing the disasters sometimes, thanks for the laughs!

The Sophisticate's Diary said...

Jedi Man- I find it tragic that someone puts their knowledge of female anatomy down to "drawing and working with 3D figures".

Find a girl that will speak to you, ask her to mimic this pose and you will see it is possible.

If you think that you can't turn a leg at 90 degrees to your body I'd recommend you stay off the dance floor.
