Microsoft Poland: At Least They Left The Asian Guy In

It looks as though you're localizing some marketing images.

Would you like to:

  • Use the original American images?

  • Hire a local photographer?

  • Clumsily get rid of the black guy?

Thanks to everyone who sent this in! Discussion on reddit is here!

I think the intention was to make this ad even more PC, since you now have an asian guy, a woman and a black guys body with a white guys head. When you can't add more people, fuse them together!

it poor job obviously, they should hire a local photographer, someone made poor decision - but i wouldn't go as far as racism as from maketing decision i understand the reason - you cater to 99.9% white country - this image look foregin in sens that people wouldn't connect with the ad. (there're many many more asian folks in poland than any other ethnic groups)

don't get me wrong - as i work in marketing (no in MS :P) and i would agree to take new shot e.g. for eastern country.

Don't forget that in countries like Poland there are simply NO black people, they simply don't live there, never moved in. Then the story becomes a little less racist, but more an example of how in every part of the world marketing goes hand in hand wit the local habitudes and that advertisement works stronger the more one recognises himelf or hid daily environment.

More politically correct idiots getting into a lather over nothing such as Ula .

Wait until you have to experience mass immigration as we've had to bear in the UK and see your country disappear.

Poland's population is virtually 99% Polish so it's unsurprising they would try and tailor the advert to potential buyers.

We have this PC nonsense all the time in the UK where adverts are carefully made to ensure no ethnic group is offended.

If this was an advert aimed at an African audience ,say Ghanaians then one would expect all three individiuals to be black Africans to appeal to the consumers there.

However as soon as the boot is on the opposite foot as in this instance, holy hell breaks loose and the PC mob (inc.our 'beloved' uber PC BBC) start citing it as a case of blatant racism. Pathetic.

Brian, I don't have a problem per se with them wanting to tailor the ad to a different audience. But if you're going to Photoshop it, there has to be a better effort made. Also, why couldn't they just shoot multiple images? How much does it honestly cost to get a different person in there and shoot 1 more picture?

Brian, Brian, Brian.

"More politically correct idiots getting into a lather over nothing such as Ula ."

What are the like of yours? Politically incorrect? I have a better name: arm chair racist.

"Wait until you have to experience mass immigration as we've had to bear in the UK and see your country disappear."

Mass immigration? You want to experience that then move to Iran (who had to deal with millions of Iraqi displaced people) or South Africa (who had to deal with millions of Zimbabwean displaced people).

That is mass immigration.

That some derided British individuals are complaining about the paltry amount of people moving to the UK (to help to pay for the benefits of the local people forever unemployed) as mass immigration is delusional paranoia.

"Poland's population is virtually 99% Polish so it's unsurprising they would try and tailor the advert to potential buyers."

And the other 1% is Chinese? As somebody that has worked in Poland I could disabuse you of your lousy maths, but I am sure you are clever enough to go and check the facts yourself.

"We have this PC nonsense all the time in the UK where adverts are carefully made to ensure no ethnic group is offended."

The only people that ever get offended is the likes of you and your mates in the BNP. Most people don't give a toss and see it like it is: an uneducated, badly performed, marketing stunt. It is only when when white people with low esteem like you complain that it becomes a hot potato issue.

"If this was an advert aimed at an African audience ,say Ghanaians then one would expect all three individiuals to be black Africans to appeal to the consumers there."

That is what you say, looking at magazines in those countries would disabuse you from your unmitigated optimism. people in those countries often complain that international media and magazines don't reflect how the local populations are. Honestly, watching TV ore reading magazines in some countries would lead you to believe that Scandinavians were the totality of the human race.

"However as soon as the boot is on the opposite foot as in this instance, holy hell breaks loose and the PC mob (inc.our 'beloved' uber PC BBC) start citing it as a case of blatant racism. Pathetic."

People in countries with majority black population don't photoshop black people in top of white folk. They simply don't, the other way around is common, as this example shows. So which opposite foot are you talking about?

As for the BBC article, your hate and rage is clearly clouding your eyesight, nowhere in the article the BBC classifies the pictures or Microsoft's actions as racist, that is an invention that you decided to pull out of your oxygen pumped brain. Stop hyperventilating, it is not good for you.

I don't believe it is racist at all. Ignorant and amateurish? Yes! Not racist.
You target your communications to the audience. In this case, Poland may not have a target population of blacks (or Asians, for that matter).
This was a job of expediency. And, probably of corporate compliance "WE WANT ALL OUR WEB PAGES TO BE CONSISTENT." I've been there.
Yes, it is less than decent PS job done on a staged, rented "swipe photo". Hold MICROSOFT Corporate responsible. Hold the Art Director responsible. Hold the webmaster responsible. And, of course, the supposed graphics person. Oh, and about the IBOOK, front and center... why not. PPT, Word, Excel, Entourage etc do work in the OS X world.

Don't read anything more into this than amateurs learning their craft. Experience doesn't come cheaply.
I'm certain people in Microsoft are busy pointing fingers as well.

I thought that the PSD dsaster folks would certainly point out the bad job on the original- you can see an obvious seam in the wrist and the black gentleman's head is at an unnatural angle, is too large, and has uneven shading around the neck. Microsoft tried to re-purpose aging marketing photos in the USA by making a scene have more minorities. A bad job, but not as bad as the job on the Polish site- the image for the Polish people is so bad it's laughable. The gaff I see is that Microsoft has no respect for the Polish people. And they'll take the marketing hit on their image because it covers up the initial attempt to make the image politically correct for the American people.
Do you folks really think the first image is natural looking?

Two words - Epic Fail

One thing that nobody seems to have noticed is how bad the translation actually is. You don't have to understand Polish to wonder why the heck each line is three times as long as in the original.

There aren't any mistakes in there, but it sounds so awfully non-catchy. bah.

Literally the translation of "empower your people" reads "enhance your company's employees' possibilities". The line on IT tools isn't any better.

omg, his neck, it's broken, why is no one calling for help???

But even photoshop disasters aside, a *Mac* is in the middle of the photos and the Windows monitor isn't even plugged in.

Looks like this was a stock photo very awkwardly pieced together.

Hey!!! This is not the first time this thing happens with microsoft. Look at this conference of David Carson, he made an ad for Microsoft and they changed for a white kid in Germany: http://www.ted.com/talks/david_carson_on_design.html

I spent 3 weeks localizing MSFT images while working at one of their agencies. For US audiences they want the most diverse imagery you can get, but you wouldn't believe the bizarre have.

The regional offices are the one's requesting these changes, albeit hoping they are more competently done.

Oh and yeah, they don't want to shell out their local budgets for a custom photo shoot. Of course.

We can debate until the cows come home whether an ad should reflect the target country's population, etc. In the end of the day, this is just a bad job. If they wanted to replace the black guy with a white guy, they should have just taken a new picture. Hell, it was a terrible picture to begin with. I can't believe that people still go in and Photoshop stuff up, knowing that blogs like this exist and they'll get called on it--especially when they're changing things up to be "diverse" (or less diverse, in this case, perhaps). It just amazes me what goes to press/web and makes me wonder who is running these companies (although in this case, I know, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised).

@ Nil Einne

Since Mac is the only major computer brand currently making ALL WHITE laptops, and is known for doing so...Occam's Razor should lead to the conclusion that it is a Macbook that Microsoft wiped the logo from when they were doing all the other Photoshop work on the pic.

Inventing the rarely-seen, never-marketed all-white laptop made by a different computer company is a complicated fabrication that the Razor cuts right through. Philosophy ftw.

(LOL @ Stefan's comment)

(Also LOL @ BBC quoting a satire post from the blog as actual opinion.)
